Pontchartrain Park played important role in New Orleans history

New Orleans is one of the most historically significant cities in the United States. And though Pontchartrain Park wasn't built until the city was already more than 225 years old, it's one of NOLA's most historically significant neighborhoods. Sharing a name with its trademark park, this was the place where many Black New Orleanians finally got a share of the American Dream in the years following the Korean War — the first suburban subdivision built for African American residents in the Gulf South. Citizens who had only been permitted to visit New Orleans’ city parks once a week now had an entire neighborhood built around a park and golf course created for them. That history earned the neighborhood inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. Actor Wendell Pierce and former New Orleans mayors Ernest Morial and Marc Morial have all been Pontchartrain Park residents. Current residents keep the neighborhood’s original spirit alive. “It’s a quiet, laid-back community where everybody kind of knows you – that has a sense of history,” says GeGe Jourdan, a Realtor with Reve Realtors.

New constructions mix with mid-century ranch-style houses

Pontchartrain Park was a planned, mid-century housing development. Most of its houses still reflect the aims of that era, giving every resident a front lawn to call their own. That remains true even for the many new homes built in the neighborhood after Hurricane Katrina. Pontchartrain Park remains a potential entry point for first-time homebuyers decades after being built for that purpose. There is a mix of ranch and cottage styles, with most houses measuring between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet. New custom-built homes mix with rehabbed neighborhood originals from the 1950s and ‘60s. Houses range from $100,000 to $370,000.

Joseph Bartholomew Golf Course a community centerpiece

Due to the segregationist laws of the era, Pontchartrain Park was the most vital part of this neighborhood when it was built. That importance hasn’t diminished even as laws changed life for the better. Joseph Bartholomew Golf Course is the centerpiece of the neighborhood. Bartholomew designed many of the courses in New Orleans, earning him a place as the first African American inducted into the New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame. But this 18-hole layout was the first where he could play before desegregation. The course remains dedicated to keeping golf accessible to all. “I think it's very unique,” Jourdan said. “When you think about a golf course community, you're thinking about close to million-dollar homes surrounding that golf course. Here, you're looking at houses that your average person can afford.” Pontchartrain Park also has tennis courts, basketball courts, a senior center, and the MLB Urban Youth Academy’s Wesley Barrow Stadium.

Gentilly Fest is Pontchartrain Park's best

Pontchartrain Park is one of several New Orleans neighborhoods that make up Gentilly, which is a name applied to the region between Bayou Saint John, Interstate 610, the Inner Harbor Irrigation Canal and Lake Pontchartrain. Gentilly Fest, which started in 2007, has become an area staple held at Pontchartrain Park. The October festival raises money for first responders who serve the area. Local vendors sell food, drinks, art, clothing, jewelry and more. There are also three music stages highlighting blues, jazz, pop, soul, and gospel music. Other family-friendly activities include horseback riding, rock climbing, and storytelling.

U.S. 90 and multiple bus routes make transit easy

U.S. Route 90 forms the southern border of the neighborhood and is a main thoroughfare heading to New Orleans East. Public transportation is also plentiful here. The NORTA No. 55 bus runs north up Press Drive and towards downtown along Elysian Fields Avenue. The No. 31 route runs east-west along Chef Menteur Highway and Gentilly Boulevard. The No. 57 bus also has routes cutting through the neighborhood to stop at SUNO.

Multiple grocery options -- and a Munch Factory

The clubhouse at Bartholomew Golf Course also houses one of the neighborhood’s top restaurants, The Munch Factory. A round of golf is not required to enjoy this casual Creole restaurant. Pontilly Coffee is known for its coffee and “Nolaches” -- a local twist on the kolache. A Walmart opened in the area’s post-Katrina rebuild is the nearest grocery option. There is also a Rouses close to nearby Lakefront Arena and a Canseco’s Market in neighboring Milneburg.

A Gentilly gem that has weathered the storms

Pontchartrain Park's CAP Index of 3 is below the national average for crime, and among the lowest scores in all of Gentilly. Mother Nature has not always treated the neighborhood well. Just two years after Pontchartrain Park suffered major flooding from Katrina, an F2 tornado struck the neighborhood. Due to both natural disasters, many houses in this historic neighborhood were built after 2010.

I enjoy living in the Ponchatrain Park neighborhood because it is safe and it is friendly. I love the fact that houses are being built from the ground up and quickly being sold. The Ponchatrain Park neighborhood is a 15 minute commute to downtown New Orleans. I also love the newly golf course that is located in the Ponchatrain Park neighborhood. The nearby businesses are beneficial as well.
