Read Boulevard West was rebuilt after Katrina and keeps evolving
Part of New Orleans East, the Read Boulevard West community is close to parks, nature institutes, and several important roadways. In fact, Leslie Ellison, a Realtor with Delisha Boyd LLC, says the neighborhood is “along a major thoroughfare that leads right to the interstate.” This revitalizing area wasn’t developed until the mid-1950s because of drainage problems. Actually, this part of the city used to be wet grass marshes and cypress swamps. But after being drained and filled in, communities began to pop up along the high ground of Chef Menteur Ridge. Since then, Read Boulevard West has come a long way. Badly damaged in Hurricane Katrina, the community has rebuilt and is welcoming a bright future.
New construction joins older homes in this changing area
Homes in the neighborhood are varied and range from cottages to ranch houses on slabs. There’s also some new construction as well as raised homes and the funnily named “snout” houses, which have a garage taking up much of the streetside view. Yards tend to be on the small side here, and while most homes are single-family, there are plenty of doubles about too.
Area schools include public and faith-based education
Served by the New Orleans Public Schools system, the area also has several parochial schools like the New Orleans Adventist Academy.
A local park and nature center offer year-round activities
Just north of Read Boulevard West, Joe W. Brown Park consists of open spaces, a football stadium, and an archery range. The range is open on Thursday throughout the year and requires reservations to take one of the free classes. The park also offers aquatic classes in its indoor pool, no matter the season. Further, there’s a tennis center, recreation center, basketball courts, play equipment, and baseball fields. Leashed pets are more than welcome. Adjacent to the park, the Audubon Louisiana Nature Center offers visitors walking trails, an interpretive center, and ranger programs. Opened in 1980, the facility occupies 86 acres of hardwood bottomland forest and has been named one of the top five urban nature centers in the nation. Destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, the center has been rebuilt with modern facilities, two miles of nature trails, and over 80 educational and public nature programs. There’s even a downloadable field guide illustrating native plants and animals that kids or adults can color.
