A cozy residential community minutes from Lake Pontchartrain and on the edge of the campus of the University of New Orleans (UNO), St. Anthony offers an alternative for New Orleanians who want the convenience of downtown without the bustle and noise. "After Katrina, most of the homes in Gentilly were rebuilt and the neighborhoods are just houses," says Realtor Betsy Birdsong with EXP Realty. “It's less expensive for people working downtown than renting in the city, so there are lots of first-time homebuyers." The positioning between UNO and Dillard University makes it inviting for students, professionals and staff at those schools, which is reflected in the almost even mix of homeowners and renters.

Modern homes replaces those that were lost
Homes in the area are a mix of single-family houses and duplexes, many of which sit on a raised foundation, a lesson learned from the past. The median build year of 2010 reflects the revival of the neighborhood, and newer homes feature newer materials designed to weather the balmy New Orleans climate better. "Lots of houses are being rebuilt with HardiPlank, which termites don't care for," says Birdsong. Styles range from raised cottages and town houses to the occasional ranch-style home, while lawns are often fenced off, with off-street parking on driveways and under car ports. The majority of homes fetch between $200,000 and $300,000, although new and custom builds can reach or top $400,000. Duplexes and multi-unit properties generally sell in the $550,000 to $650,000 range.

Shopping and dining just outside of the neighborhood
Residents of St. Anthony have to take a trip out of the neighborhood for most of their shopping and dining. "There's hardly any commerce in the area so it’s a true bedroom community,” Birdsong points out. While most of the nearby options are national fast-food chains, the local chain Daiquiris & Company features classics like an original style muffuletta and overstuffed po-boys, with plenty of daiquiri flavors, in a neon-clad hybrid of a diner and a sports bar. For the origin of the po’boy, John Gendusa Bakery is less than a mile away. Family-owned-and-operated for multiple generations, the traditional bread bakery was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. However, the family rallied and saved the century-old business. Locally owned and operated Rouses Market and Canseco’s Filmore Market are nearby for grocery runs, while 3 miles away, Chef Menteur Highway has a lengthy strip of big box retail stores.

Celebrating Gentilly
While it’s a bit of a hike away at Pontchartrain Park, Gentilly Fest every October celebrates all things Gentilly – which refers to the greater area that contains St. Anthony, Milneburg, and other surrounding neighborhoods. Three days of music, entertainment, arts and crafts, food and children’s activities make it an event that much of the neighborhood gets out for. The Lakefront Arena at UNO hosts national performing arts events including concerts and comedians, as well as UNO athletics events.

Unique school choice system offers options
St. Anthony is part of the Orleans Parish School Board, which operates under the unique publicly funded and privately operated charter school blend. There are no schools directly in the neighborhood, however nearby Arthur Ashe and Pierre A. Capdau charter schools offer kindergarten through middle school education, and both are graded a C-minus by Niche. Benjamin Franklin High School, a charter rated the No. 1 high school in Louisiana by U.S. News & World Report as well as Niche, is just north and has an A-plus grade. Just to the south, Brother Martin High School is an all-boys private Catholic School.

Small local parks but more on the outskirts
Neighborhood green spaces include Donnelly Playground and Filmore Playground, both of which include small play sets for children to climb over. While it’s a bit outside of the neighborhood, the Milne Rec Center offers indoor and outdoor activities, with ball fields, playgrounds and a tennis court outside along with basketball courts, a fitness center and a multi-purpose room indoors. Classes are offered for all ages, from resistance training to line dancing. Numerous churches ring the neighborhood, including Catholic, Baptist, and non-denominational worship halls.

Getting around St. Anthony
With sidewalks crossing the neighborhood along with quiet side streets, St. Anthony is easy to walk around and bike – however, the residential nature and limited public transit means getting to amenities usually requires driving. Flying out of New Orleans usually means making the trek across town to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, a 15-mile drive that often takes 20 minutes or more; Lakefront Airport, while closer, does not have commercial flights and is a general aviation airport with charter and private capabilities. 24-hour emergency care is also a short drive away to the heart of town, with University Medical Center New Orleans and LCMC Health roughly 5 miles south.

Where the levees broke, a reminder of the risks
The Levee Exhibit Hall and Garden was created at the east breach site of the London Avenue Canal, where the levees failed in 2005. Featuring six exhibit panels under a covered walkway as well as a rain garden, it is dedicated to historic preservation of the breach. It doesn’t just hold on to the past though – it acts as a constant reminder of the extreme flooding risk inherent in living in the St. Anthony neighborhood.
