High-rise buildings dominate the area
Over one-third of the buildings in Turtle Bay are commercial office buildings: “We see a lot of professionals buying in this area,” Conti says. “For residents who live here part-time, say for work, being this close to Grand Central is a big appeal. For others, it’s about quick access to the theater district’s nightlife.” Prewar town houses in Italian-Mediterranean and Georgian styles have $4 million to $6 million price tags. Two-bedroom condos in luxury high-rise buildings start at $2 million, but prices climb to $11 million for larger units, with penthouses asking as much as $12 million to $40 million. Studios in older, postwar condos list as low as $300,000 to $500,000 and one-bedrooms range between $400,000 to $1.5 million.

Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, a narrow, tree-lined park, lies at the heart of Turtle Bay, both geographically and culturally. Restaurants in Turtle Bay’s 27-square blocks keep with the neighborhood's global theme: there’s Turkish baklava at Sip Sak, Japanese sushi at Tsushima or French pastries at Le Petit Parisien. Many residents are partial to Ess-A-Bagel for breakfast, evidenced by the long, albeit fast, line of customers each morning. “You can eat very well for not a lot of money at pubs or fast-casual spots, or you can find high-end, fine dining restaurants,” Conti says.

Elite private schools and well-rated public schools nearby
Though there aren’t any public schools in Turtle Bay, nearby neighborhoods have well-ranked options. In Murray Hill, The River School offers interactive programs for elementary students, including a robotics club, and has an A-rating from Niche. In Sutton Place, the B+ rated High School of Art and Design allows teens to select a major like architecture or film. In Turtle Bay, two private schools earned an A+ rating from Niche: The Beekman School, an 80-student high school, and Lyceum Kennedy French American School, a kindergarten through 12 institution with a 100 percent college-acceptance rate.

City and suburb access is a short walk away
To catch the subway, residents walk or bus to a nearby neighborhood. At Grand Central, commuters can catch the 4, 5, 6, 7 and S subway lines or the Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road. The E and F subway lines are also available at 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue. The MTA has plans to add two new stations along 2nd Avenue in the future. Two crosstown buses run through Midtown, while an express bus shuttles people up or down town.

Being near the UN headquarters, it’s not unusual to come across public demonstrations, particularly through Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, or large events that leave some streets closed. That said, locals can expect a prominent police presence in the area. “People who live here have learned to appreciate that because it keeps the neighborhood safe," Conti says.
