On the fringes of Maryland, Glasgow sits on the western border of Delaware and is quadrisected by perpendicular stretches of Routes 40 and 896, which intersect in the middle of the neighborhood. A largely residential region, Glasgow takes its name from Scotland’s most populated city and encompasses a blend of commercial areas, recreational expanses and subdivisions. “Glasgow comes in two flavors,” says Will Webber, a licensed Realtor and broker with Keller Williams Realty. “It’s a big slice of the entire pizza of New Castle County, lumped with the Newark area. The first word to use is suburbia, but it also offers everything from public libraries and general shopping to all kinds of restaurants and activities.” Glasgow has proximity to Newark, with many residents less than 8 miles from the city. Residents on either side of Route 896 can find restaurants, parks, schools and more all concentrated around the central thoroughfare. “It’s right off of Pulaski Highway, right next to Bear – they’re almost intertwined, very similar and very close together,” says Amanda Bradford, a local Realtor with Crown Homes Real Estate. “There’s the really popular People’s Plaza shopping section with a movie theater, a pub and some restaurants, but the majority of Glasgow is pretty residential.”

Walking the trails at Glasgow Regional Park
Glasgow Regional Park sits tucked in the northeastern corner of where 40 and 896 intersect, spanning over 200 acres and occupying much of eastern Glasgow. Its walking trails form an oval but gradually devolve into meandering paths the farther east they go, while the Glasgow Park Trail encircles much of the property. The recreational space also offers a playground, the Glasgow Skatepark, the New Castle County Bark Park and more. “It’s a great general area for walking and exercise,” Webber says. “They built a hill for sledding when it snows. There’s almost nowhere else in Delaware that you can do that, because Delaware’s pretty flat.” Sunset Lake Preserve sits in northern Glasgow and adjoins a lake with the same moniker, where locals can get permission to fish. Just south of the neighborhood, Lums Pond Park sprawls across nearly 2,000 acres and boasts bike trails, a zip line, a nature center and recreation on the water. “There’s a lot of other green areas kind of mixed into the neighborhoods,” Bradford says. A Sky Zone Trampoline Park sits up Route 896, just north of Glasgow.

Sprawling residential landscapes with single-family homes and townhouses
Many of the homes in Glasgow date to within the last 50 years, and even to as recent as after the turn of the 21st century. “Most of the houses are newer than if you were in suburban, northern Wilmington,” Webber says. “Delaware’s a bargain because it’s affordable and there’s no sales tax.” Single-family homes make up most of the properties in the neighborhood and typically range from $400,000 to $600,000. Styles include split-levels, colonial-style homes, custom designs and some ranch-style homes. Glasgow also has a significant number of townhouses in the area, which often range from $300,000 to $400,000. “35 years ago, nobody would buy there because it was too far away from Wilmington to be a bedroom community, but everything got built up and Glasgow is now a blessing,” Webber says. The neighborhood has a CAP crime score of 3 out of 10, under the national average of 4.

Shopping at Peoples Plaza on Pulaski Highway
Along Pulaski Highway, also designated as Route 40, the Peoples Plaza Shopping Mall operates as the commercial hub of Glasgow. Locals can grab a drink at McGlynns Pub or a sandwich at Casapulla’s Glasgow Subs, shop at the Safeway, catch a movie at Regal Cinemas or find around-the-house needs at the Home Depot. More restaurants are situated farther east or west on Route 40. “That’s how Route 40 looks from the Maryland line all the way to the New Jersey line,” Webber says. “It’s all commercial and all strip shopping centers. It’s easy to get to restaurants.” To the west, Guilday’s serves up diner food, while the breweries Midnight Oil Brewing Company and Autumn Arch Beer Project sit close to one another in northwestern Glasgow.

Getting around northern Delaware or into New Jersey and Maryland
An interchange onto Interstate 95 is less than 4 miles north of the neighborhood by way of Route 896, linking residents with pathways into Maryland, New Jersey and beyond. Route 1 is less than 6 miles east. “To the right of Pulaski Highway, you can head onto Route 1,” Bradford says. “From Glasgow, you’re basically right next to Elkton in Maryland, and you’re not too far from northeastern Baltimore. Within Delaware, Wilmington is under 20 miles northeast of Glasgow, while Newark, Delaware is about 7 miles south. Baltimore sits about 60 miles west, while Philadelphia is around 50 miles to the northeast of the neighborhood.
