Where neighbors know each other and country lanes wind between acres of farmland, Newark, Illinois is a small village of 1,000 residents, situated 60 miles southwest of Chicago. This one-horse town was established in the 1830s and many of its residents grew up here. While there are few amenities within the village, a 10-minute drive can take locals to grocery stores, chain restaurants and hardware stores. “People that live in Newark appreciate the quaint, country lifestyle and pretty farmland views,” says Beth David, a local real estate agent with Baird & Warner. “Lots of the residents have been there for a long time. You have the generational farmers, along with younger community members who commute to nearby areas like Yorkville and Plano for work.”

Small class sizes
The public schools of Newark have small class sizes, allowing for lower student-to-teacher ratios. Prekindergarten through fourth-grade students attend Newark Elementary School, which earns a B overall grade from Niche and an A-minus on its teachers. A 5-mile drive north will bring parents to Millbrook Junior High School, the fourth-best public middle school in Kendall County, according to Niche. Newark Community High School earns a B overall grade and serves 160 of the area’s students, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 9-1. Juniors and seniors can apply to take courses at the Indian Valley Vocational Center to gain expertise on career-relevant topics like sports medicine, aviation mechanics and welding.
Newark Community High School District 18 has dozens of effective teachers and staff.

“Newark locals are very friendly and neighborly,” David says. “Everyone helps each other out. For example, if someone is sick, people pitch in to bring them meals, and if someone needs a ride, people are very willing to help.” This strong sense of community is also exemplified in the support of the area’s two local eateries. Patrons of Newark’s Country Kitchen can enjoy sweet and savory breakfast dishes alike, from country-fried steak to waffles topped with strawberries and whipped cream, and the lunch and dinner menu features classic pub bites. When in a pinch, folks can swing by Geo’s Pizzeria on Main Street to pick up a quick slice or a full pie.
