North Ironbound grew from farmland to buzzing cultural hub
Newark’s North Ironbound community earned its name because railroads, highways and industrial plants border the area. The neighborhood started as farmland but quickly became an industrial hub in the 1830s. Since then, North Ironbound has become a thoroughly diverse area with an eclectic range of restaurants and near-constant cultural celebrations. “It’s an explosion of culture,” says Marc Titus, a Realtor with Realty One Group who spends time in the area. “There are restaurants on just about every corner. There are good night spots and social events. People walk the curbside that allows you to go bar hopping or restaurant hopping.”
Rare single-family townhouses and multifamily homes throughout
Rare single-family townhouses and condos range from $340,000 to $530,000, while more common detached multifamily homes can sell for $420,000 to $990,000. Full apartment buildings and multifamily dwellings with many interior units have sold for $1 million to $2 million. “I see more renters than owners,” Titus says. “One building might have three units, and people pay a premium to live here.” Homes often feature Queen Anne designs with bay windows or brick, Federal-inspired designs. Properties often have limited yard space, and street parking is common throughout the neighborhood. Some properties have fenced-in parking spaces alongside the homes with detached garages in the back.
Portugal Day and other events bring crowds to North Ironbound
From Brazilian Day to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel’s Italian Festival, North Ironbound is almost always in party mode. Titus says the biggest event is the Portugal Day Festival, often held the first weekend in June, with food vendors and live music. The community holds events leading up to the big day, including raising the Portuguese Flag at city hall, a special Mass service at Newark Cathedral and a grand parade down Ferry Street. Sports fans can catch a New Jersey Devils hockey game at Prudential Center or see the New York Red Bulls play soccer at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Family-owned restaurants along Ferry Street are always busy
Ferry Street is constantly buzzing with people walking into clothing boutiques and family-owned restaurants. Many dining spots are long-standing favorites serving Italian, Latin and fusion cuisine. Little Tijuana has a full menu of tacos, tequilas and weekend brunch items. Seabra's Marisqueira has been serving fresh seafood since 1989, and Mompou Tapas Bar & Restaurant became a destination when it opened in 2005. Titus recommends Adega Grill for its blended design, where customers can hang out in the lounge, sit down for dinner or relax at the bar. When it comes to groceries, the area has multiple Seabra Foods stores and the Garden Farm Market on Jefferson Street.
School choice gives North Ironbound students freedom in education
North Ironbound is part of the Newark Public Schools District, rated C-plus by Niche. The district offers a school choice program, so while students might be zoned for Wilson Avenue Elementary School, they can apply to attend the nearby Lafayette Street Elementary School or Hawkins Street Elementary. All three receive C ratings and teach up to eighth grade, so students transition to East Side High School, which gets a B-minus. The Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design opened in 2025 to reduce the large student population at East Side High. The school’s building was previously the St. James Hospital, which has been vacant since 2008.
Easy commuting throughout Newark and to New York City
North Ironbound residents have direct routes to jobs in New York City and around Newark. Some people drive about 10 miles to NYC using U.S. Route 9, while others take the train from Newark Penn Station to Manhattan for a roughly 40-minute commute. State Route 21 and Route 9 lead to the Newark Liberty International Airport, where some residents clock in for work. There are churches within walking distance of homes, including historic landmarks like St. Stephan’s Church, and temples and masjids are in the greater Ironbound community. Wide sidewalks make it easy to bike or walk to nearby stores and restaurants, but NJ Transit buses also make stops throughout the neighborhood. Newark Community Health Center is one of the medical facilities in the neighborhood, but Saint Michael's Medical Center in downtown Newark offers emergency services, 2 miles away.
Taking in the views at Riverfront Park
Residents can wander through two parks along the Passaic River. Riverfront Park is the longest, with paved tennis courts, athletic fields and a playground partially shaded by trees. A paved walking trail flows alongside the river to a boat dock where kayakers might launch onto the water. “There’s a lot of development in and around Ironbound,” Titus says. “Riverfront Park is expanding, and that’s going to provide a lot of green space. There are other parks, but they’re really doing a big thing there.” The newest addition will open in 2025 with a new amphitheater, an art wall and kiosks local vendors can use. Riverbank Park is the smallest green space in Essex County, with almost 11 acres. People visit to use the baseball and soccer fields or let their kids explore the playground.
Smells and sounds of North Ironbound
Living so close to the airport means dealing with near-constant plane noise. With the Passaic River flowing to the north, roads and sidewalks can flood during torrential rain, and signs prohibit parking on some streets when snowplows are necessary. The Passaic River also causes a strong order due to waste runoff from manufacturing and sewage treatment plants in the northernmost part of the neighborhood. The Ironbound Community Corporation group actively petitions to prevent additional sewer plants and demand cleanup.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
