South Ironbound residents are steps away from culture, fun and food
South Ironbound is one half of the greater Ironbound community, a destination in Newark for great food and cultural festivals held along Ferry Street. Residents can work in the nearby distribution centers and popular restaurants, but the area is also prime for commuting. Marc Titus is a Realtor with Realty One Group and knows the area intimately. “You have the proximity and everything else in New Jersey," Titus says. "The airport is close by, and it’s close to major highways. Transit is not a problem. They’re using millions of dollars redeveloping the train station. There’s lots of growth that’s coming in, even in New Jersey itself.” While South Ironbound’s deep sense of cultural celebration draws new residents, some people move to the area for easy transportation.

Multifamily homes and condos on the market
National-style and Queen Anne-inspired multifamily homes are typical in the community, and there are detached and semi-detached properties. Multifamily homes can sell for $473,000 to $900,000, depending on the size, though larger buildings have sold for $900,000 to $1.6 million. Condos and rare single-family homes have sold for $250,000 to $550,000. Well over half of South Ironbound residents rent their homes, and homeowners might buy a multifamily property and rent out the extra units. Many homes have garages or gated alley driveways, but cars are always parked on the sides of the road. Wide sidewalks border the streets, allowing residents to walk to shops, restaurants or parks.
Multi-family homes built at the turn of the century give a historic charm to South Ironbound.

Casual lunches at Adega Grill and reservations at Taste of Portugal
Ironbound as a whole is known for its cuisine, and South Ironbound has highly rated restaurants. Casa d'Paco is a family-owned restaurant that serves lunch and dinner, and the desserts are made fresh following family recipes. Taste of Portugal has an upscale dinner menu that goes well with the restaurant’s selection of Portuguese and domestically sourced wines. “Adega Grill has a lounge area, a restaurant and a bar,” Titus says. “You can go in no matter what mood you’re in. You can sit at the bar and watch the game. The bartenders are great. You can sit in the lounge and talk, with music in the background. You can get a really nice meal; Dinner is wonderful there.”
There are plenty of grocery stores to walk to, from Seabra Foods to more specialized shops like Crab Palace. Ferry Street also features a few locally owned boutiques, like Nadri Fashion and Bella e Blessed Boutique. Downtown Newark has even more boutiques and is a roughly 15-minute bus ride away.

Portugal Day shuts down Ferry Street for three days of celebration
Ferry Street is often the venue for Ironbound’s cultural festivals, which happen nearly once a month. There’s everything from the AfroBeat Festival to the Annual Latin Festival. “The biggest one is the Portugal Day parade,” Titus says. “That’s the crème de la crème. It’s a wonderful time.” Every June, people from the community and beyond gather along Ferry Street to see the parade of floats and folk dancers, enjoy live performances and order from street vendors.
