Newcastle offers historic homes and countryside views
Newcastle is a rural community tucked away in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, about 30 miles northeast of Sacramento. The town center is surrounded by winding, hilly streets lined with homes that date back to the mid-1800s and early 1900s, many of which feature views of the surrounding countryside. More homes are available in the rural areas outside the town center, typically situated on large, wooded lots. Newcastle has a handful of local businesses, small grocers and restaurants, so residents won’t necessarily need to make the trek to Rocklin or Auburn. “It’s a quaint little town that has a small old-town district with fruit farm sheds and a couple of restaurants,” says Realtor Sheila Reynoso of Realty One Group, who has been working in the area for nearly 20 years. “The town has a farm-to-fork produce market right downtown.”

Architectural styles range from Victorian to ranch homes
New Castle offers a wide array of homes, ranging from century-old bungalows to Traditional homes built within the last 30 years. The streets closest to the town center offer a hodgepodge of architectural styles, including early 20th-century Victorians, Craftsman homes, midcentury ramblers, and ranch-style homes. “There are a lot of old historical homes that are unique to the area and very nice to look at,” Reynoso says. Newer homes are typically located farther out from the town center and feature large, rural lots with ample privacy. Prices range from around $400,000 to $1.2 million, depending on the size and age of the home. The town is also home to the Castle City Mobile Home Community, where mobile homes list for $50,000 to $200,000.

Local elementary and charter schools with strong ratings
Students can start their education at New Castle Elementary School, which serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade. It received an A-minus rating from Niche. The final step is A-rated Del Oro High School, located approximately 5 miles away in the town of Loomis. The high school boasts a 96% graduation rate, surpassing the statewide average. For an alternative, students might consider Harvest Ridge Cooperative Charter School in Newcastle, which earns a B rating and serves kindergarten through eighth grade.

Newcastle offers small grocers and restaurants close to home
Newcastle has a handful of shops and restaurants, primarily located along Main Street and Taylor Road. La Fornaretta is a local favorite that serves authentic Sicilian cuisine, including homemade pizza and hand-rolled pasta, while Champs Tavern offers pub fare and cold beer with divey décor. The town is also home to Newcastle Cheese Shop, a locally owned sandwich shop and deli, as well as Newcastle Produce, a long-standing grocer specializing in locally sourced produce. For everything else, residents can head to Auburn, a larger town about 4 miles north. Auburn has a Safeway grocery store, a Home Depot and plenty of shops, specialty stores and restaurants. “You get that country feel, but you’re still close enough to get whatever you need. It’s very close to Auburn, Loomis and Lincoln,” Reynoso says.

Overlook Park and Recreation Park provide space for sports and play
The nearest parks, trails, and outdoor destinations are found in Auburn. Overlook Park is especially popular. It features 54 acres of open space, a skate park, trails, and stunning views of the American River Canyon. Its trails lead to Auburn Whitewater Park, a restored section of the river where people can practice their whitewater rafting. Recreation Park is nearby, and features ball fields, playgrounds and an outdoor swimming pool. Hiking trails are plentiful in the region, especially in the canyons and hills that skirt the edge of the American River. Newcastle is about 100 miles from Lake Tahoe, one of the West Coast’s major vacation and outdoor destinations.

Celebrate Newcastle brings food, music and artisan vendors
The town is home to the Celebrate Newcastle! festival. Held every May, it transforms the town’s Main Street into a street fair and market with food, produce, music and artisan vendors. Just up the road, Auburn hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a year-round farmers’ market and a weekly concert series that takes place every Friday in the spring, summer and fall.
Interstate 80 connects residents to Roseville, Sacramento and the Bay
Newcastle is situated along Interstate 80, a major highway that connects to Roseville, Sacramento and the Bay Area to the south, making it an attractive location for commuters. Residents will likely need a car to get around, as there is no public transportation. There’s an Amtrak stop in Auburn for those who prefer to travel by rail. Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital is 8 miles north, and Sacramento International Airport is 34 miles away.
