Newcomerstown is a centrally located village with baseball ties
Newcomerstown is a village with around 4,000 residents that rests along the northern banks of the Tuscarawas River. “We have a small downtown with a few boutiques and lots of pizza places, and you’re about 45 minutes from most anything you’d want,” says Ron Hickman, a Realtor with Re/Max Crossroads Properties who has lived in Newcomerstown all his life. “It’s centrally located for travel into Zanesville and Canton.”
Baseball fans may know the village as the home of MLB pitcher Cy Young, who lived there during his later years. The local Elks lodge has a mural featuring Young, and the annual Cy Young Days Festival draws fans from around the region.

Homes with character, some affected by trains and flood zone
Sidewalks are relatively common throughout the community, and private driveways and back alleys provide off-street parking. Housing includes a mix of Colonial Revival, American Foursquare and ranch-style homes. “Most village homes are older, and some have a lot of character,” Hickman says. “There are also a few newer cabins near the river.”
Prices vary based on condition, with fixer-uppers selling from $30,000 to $70,000, and most houses running between $80,000 and $300,000. Manufactured homes are also available. They’re typically priced from $20,000 to $90,000, and owners pay about $400 in monthly lot rent. Railroad tracks run through the village, and freight trains sometimes pass, which may be a disturbance for residents. The Tuscarawas River’s level can rise during heavy rains, and lenders might require flood insurance for properties closest to the banks.

Village recreation and trips to Salt Fork State Park
Residents have access to a wide range of recreation. Cy Young Memorial Park is home to a baseball field, a playground and a pool. The village has its own bowling alley, Cy Young Lanes, and the River Greens Golf Course, about 5 miles west, is open to the public. Simonds-Heller Park has river access for fishing, canoeing and kayaking, and the nearly 5-mile Buckhorn Creek Trail offers space for biking and dog walking. Salt Fork State Park, about 20 miles south, is a popular weekend destination. It spans more than 17,000 acres and has wooded hiking trails and hunting areas. The reservoir that winds through its center provides opportunities for water sports, such as fishing and waterskiing.

Small businesses, plus more options in Canton and Zanesville
The village is home to a few small businesses, including The Feed Barn, a drive-through farming supply store. The Oddbox sells Pokémon cards and board games, and on Friday nights, the shop hosts Magic: The Gathering tournaments. Riesbeck’s is the village grocery. “The downtown has changed a lot since my childhood. People used to rely on stores in Newcomerstown, and it was unheard of to drive for shopping,” Hickman says. “Now, they drive to the Belden Village Mall in Canton or Colony Square Mall in Zanesville for most things.”
Newcomerstown also has a small selection of locally owned restaurants. In the mornings, some people head to Main Street Coffee for breakfast. Chilly Willy’s is a favorite for sundaes and hand-dipped ice cream. Dick’s Place offers casual home cooking, and Damon's All American Pizza Pie serves pizza, wings and subs.

Community events celebrate Cy Young and Christmas
At the end of June, the village holds Cy Young Days Festival, a weekend honoring the baseball legend who lived in Newcomerstown for many years. Participants can compete in a 5K race, watch the parade down Main Street and enjoy vintage baseball at Cy Young Memorial Park. The annual Christmas parade takes place in December. “I drive Santa around the parade route in my old Ford truck, and I take him to the Temperance Tavern Museum where he magically lights the Christmas tree,” Hickman says. “Then he goes inside and has milk and cookies with the kids."
Access to interstate travel and nearby emergency services
GoBus provides service into Cleveland and other Ohio cities, and Tuscarawas County Public Transportation offers on-demand shuttle service throughout the county. Most locals depend on cars for travel. Interstate 77 runs along the eastern edge of the community, connecting drivers to Canton, about 45 miles away, and the Akron-Canton Airport, around 50 miles north. The closest emergency room is in the Coshocton Regional Medical Center, approximately 15 miles west.
