Rural community along the James River
Along the James River in Isle of Wight County, the quaint, independent community of Rushmere offers rural living just 10 minutes from shopping and dining in Smithfield. Colonized in 1634, the area played a role in both the American Revolution and Civil War, evident by its historical forts along the riverfront. Homes sit along country roads surrounded by miles of forest and farmland, and residents say they wouldn’t have it any other way. “We signed up for the country life, and that’s what we wanted,” says Wendy Plemmons, an associate broker and Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices RW Towne Realty, who lives in Rushmere and has been selling homes in the area for 22 years. “If you were in the city and someone was going slow, you’d probably be annoyed. But you’re behind this tractor that’s six times the size of your vehicle, so I can’t help but just laugh at it.”
Diverse range of homes starting in the $200,000s
Homebuyers can find a wide range of homes here, including older farmhouses, sometimes from the early 1900s, ranch-style homes and newly constructed contemporary-style houses. There are sprawling properties sitting far off country roads, subdivisions with homes in cul-de-sacs and waterfront properties on the James that come with private boat docks. “There are houses that sit on 50 acres, and ones that sit on less than an acre,” says Plemmons. Older homes typically sell for $200,000 to $500,000, while newer houses usually go for $550,000 to $800,000. The CAP Index gives Rushmere a crime score of 1 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.
Commuting via State Route 10
With its rural streetscape and lack of public transit, Rushmere is car dependent. Smithfield is 7 miles south on state Route 10. From there, U.S. Route 258 connects to the James River Drawbridge, which leads to Newport News, about 20 miles away. The closest hospital is the Bon Secours Health Center 23 miles south in Suffolk. However, a new hospital is being built in Smithfield and is expected to open in 2026. The closest airport, Newport News/Williamsburg International, is 30 miles west.
Highly rated schools, specialized programs in neighboring cities
Students may start at Hardy Elementary, which gets a B from Niche, before going to Smithfield Middle, which earns a B-plus. Smithfield High also gets a B and offers students the opportunity to take additional courses at The Governor’s School for the Arts in Norfolk or The Governor’s School for Science and Technology in Hampton.
Recreation on the James, hiking trails, off-roading
Locals can visit Tyler’s Beach for swimming, fishing and boating in the James. The ruins of Civil War-era Fort Huger are open to the public, offering hiking trails. Nearby Smithfield also has green spaces like the 200-acre Windsor Castle Park, featuring hiking trails, a playspace and a kayak launch along Cypress Creek.
Shopping and dining in Smithfield
The only store in Rushmere is a Dollar General along Route 10. To the south though, Smithfield has a historic downtown with local shops and eateries like the Wharf Hill Brewing Company, Smithfield Gourmet Bakery and Smithfield Ice Cream Parlor. Locals can also browse Main Street’s stores, including Hamtown Mercantile, which offers a collection of more than 40 local boutique sellers under one roof.
