Elmhurst blends vintage and modern homes in an area with many long-term residents
Tucked in a prime spot near Interstate 64 in Norfolk, Virginia, lies Elmhurst, an established, working-class neighborhood that seamlessly blends the past with the present through its charming mix of vintage and modern homes. “You can tell Elmhurst neighbors take good care of their homes, and they look out for each other,” says Nadine Frost, a Realtor with Swell Real Estate Co. “Some people have been there for years, which is a good sign. The previous owners of my listing - and about four others who lived in the same little court - had been there for something like 40 years.”
Traditional features and modern builds are available in Elmhurst
Along Elmhurst’s leafy, sidewalk-lined streets sit a variety of single-family homes, from 1930s cottages and mid-century Cape Cods to 1980s brick ranch styles and newer 21st-century builds with traditional features like front porches and pitched roofs. “Elmhurst isn’t a cookie-cutter neighborhood,” Frost says. Home sizes range from around 1,000 to 2,400 square feet with three to four bedrooms, and list prices tend to fall between $285,000 and $450,000. “Elmhurst is a more affordable area, so it’s a great stepping-stone neighborhood for first-time buyers,” Frost says. “You can find a really good little home in that area if you keep your eyes peeled.”
Elmhurst schools from Sherwood Forest Elementary to Booker T. Washington High
Elmhurst youngsters attend Norfolk City Public Schools, including Sherwood Forest Elementary School, rated a C by Niche, and Norview Middle, which earns a C-minus. After Norview, students move to C-minus rated Booker T. Washington High, home to the school district’s Academy of Visual and Performing Arts.
Outdoor activities from sports to garden tours a short distance from Elmhurst
For some fresh-air fun, Lakewood Park is a quick 3-mile drive from Elmhurst. Within the 40-acre green space, not only can parkgoers enjoy a playground, sports fields, basketball and tennis courts and a nature trail, but there’s also a lake with a center for local rowing clubs and a dance and music center that offers affordable classes for both kids and adults. Folks can also roam the 175 acres comprising the Norfolk Botanical Garden, the largest of its kind in Virginia, where over 60 themed gardens, including a children’s garden, are a sight to behold. In addition to exploring the grounds, visitors can take a narrated tram tour, spend a quiet moment in the butterfly house or learn something new in a horticulture class.
Diverse dining options, fresh seafood, and shopping outlets
Locally owned Blackdog Café, which serves freshly made soups, sandwiches, rice bowls and more, is a great spot to grab that park picnic lunch, and the Yendidi restaurant gets rave reviews for its tasty, authentic West African dishes, like jollof rice and kontomire spinach stew. Nearby George’s Seafood Market is popular with locals on the hunt for the fresh catch of the day, from oysters to rockfish, and for everyday errand running, there are plenty of grocery and big-box stores along nearby Military Highway, like Food Lion, Target and Walmart Supercenter. Shopaholics rejoice in the proximity of Norfolk Premium Outlets – just 3 miles from Elmhurst – where they can shop ‘til they drop at over 65 factory stores, including Nike, Michael Kors and Gap.
Elmhurst is close to Norfolk's vibrant waterfront activities
Living less than 6 miles from the waterfront, Elmhurst residents can take part in the city’s many events and festivals, like the annual Norfolk Harborfest at Town Point Park. The largest and longest-running of Norfolk’s festivals, Harborfest features three days of non-stop fun, including the Parade of Sail, live entertainment, naval exhibitions and a breathtaking fireworks display.
Major roads, public buses, and a river ferry provide easy access around the city
With its proximity to major area roads, like Chesapeake Boulevard and Military Highway, and Interstate 64, also known as the Hampton Roads Beltway, commuters have easy access around the city and to other parts of Hampton Roads. Norfolk International Airport is only 2.5 miles from Elmhurst, the Norfolk Naval Station is less than 10, and the Virginia Beach oceanfront is around 17 miles. Folks taking public transportation can hop on a Hampton Roads Transit bus at one of the stops along Sewells Point Road, and those heading to Portsmouth but hoping to avoid area highway traffic – which can be heavy at times – can catch a ride on the Elizabeth River Ferry.
