Waterfront living in Lake Taylor
Not many neighborhoods offer lakefront housing, short drives to the bay and the ocean, easy highway and airport access and an array of diverse food options, but Lake Taylor checks each of those boxes. "It's close to the airport. That's definitely a big plus. It's close to Virginia Beach Boulevard," says Jeremy Allen, a Realtor with The Real Estate Group. "When you're in Lake Taylor, it's good for military communities in Norfolk because it puts you right near the main Norfolk base. Being right there, you're minutes away from the beach."
Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes in a fast-moving market
A leafy neighborhood in a small, gridded pocket of the Norfolk outskirts, Lake Taylor is an attractive choice for potential home buyers in search of convenient living. Home prices can vary significantly. Smaller ranch-style homes can range between $275,000 to $350,000 while larger colonials with several bedrooms may top out around $400,000. The neighborhood also features newer homes on the Lake Taylor waterfront that can price north of $600,000. The housing market for Lake Taylor is very competitive with most homes selling in under three weeks.
State championships at Lake Taylor High
Students in Lake Taylor are served by the Norfolk Public Schools district. Children from pre-K to Grade 8 can attend Lake Taylor School off Kempsville Road while teens can go to the neighboring Lake Taylor High School. The high school offers an extremely competitive athletics department having won state championships in football in 2012, 2014 and 2019. Lake Taylor also sits just south of Norfolk Academy — a private, co-educational day school. Established in 1728, it is one of the oldest operating schools in the United States.
Picnic and play at Princess Anne Park
Princess Anne Park is a common gathering place for Lake Taylor residents. Invite friends for a game of pickup basketball or take the kids to the community playground. Locals can also favor the nearby River Oaks Park off Roslyn Drive for time outdoors.
Big-box retail and locally owned restaurants with global flavors
Lake Taylor is surrounded by convenient shopping choices. A Walmart Supercenter is stationed in the heart of the neighborhood while Janaf Shopping Yard contains a BJ's Wholesale Club and an ALDI. A Costco Wholesale is also located less than a mile south off Poplar Hall Drive, and the sprawling Norfolk Premium Outlets, containing retail shops and restaurants, sits just 2 miles north off Northampton Boulevard. You'll find no shortage of dining options in Lake Taylor. Bordering North Military Highway, Lake Taylor residents have a wealth of both chain and local food choices. El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant, known for its Quesadilla Fajita and shrimp chimichangas, is one of the top local eateries in the area. You can also head to Genghis Khan Mongolian Bar-B-Q and try its signature build-your-own stir-fries.
Getting around from Lake Taylor
One of the major benefits of living in Lake Taylor is its road access. The neighborhood borders the Hampton Roads Beltway and East Virginia Beach Boulevard and also sits just 3 miles south of Norfolk International Airport. Residents can also take the bus on Hampton Roads Transit bus route 15, which runs every 30 minutes during peak hours with multiple stops along North Military Highway. "It's kind of a central part of Hampton Roads," Allen says. "If you look at a map of the area, it's right in the middle of everything, which I think is another reason why it's so desirable."
The quick highway access routinely comes in handy with downtown Norfolk 6 miles west and the Virginia Beach oceanfront 14 miles east. Spend the day on the beach at Neptune's Park to take in the coastal views and live music or head north to Ocean View Beach and work on your tan. With everyday essentials right around the corner and the coast a quick drive away, Lake Taylor offers an array of perks that make it a fine option for home buyers in the Norfolk area.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
