A prime waterfront community in Norfolk
Embodying the historic beauty of Norfolk, Lakewood is a quiet neighborhood on the peninsula between the Lafayette River and Wayne Creek. With sweeping views of the waters and verdant woodlands as backdrops, Lakewood is a prime location in Norfolk with easy access to Norfolk Naval Base, Old Dominion University, area parks and restaurants in the downtown part of the city. “Lakewood is one of the premier neighborhoods that is known for waterfront living. This is a very desirable area for its beautiful natural landscape, estate homes by the water and the central location,” says Craig Boyer, a Virginia Beach resident for over 30 years who has been servicing the Tidewater region as a Realtor and investment agent with All/Pros Realty Inc.

Historic homes by the Lafayette River and Wayne Creek
Lakewood is canopied by overhanging pines, maples and crape myrtles. In autumn one might see pinecones covering the garden beds of cottages and Cape Cod homes. Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival estates are often tucked by towering trees, long driveways and thoughtfully designed landscaping lawns. A single-story cottage around 2,000 square feet is likely priced between $350,000 and $450,000, and a two-story home over 3,000 square feet is about $650,000. Retreats with private waterfront and boat lifts are usually priced at approximately $1 million. “Although not a historical district, many Lakewood homes date to the 1920s and the 1950s. The stately properties capture a lot of the historic beauty and charm from those eras, and there are some large waterfront properties by Wayne Creek priced in the millions and come with their own boat docks,” Boyer says. There may be some homes located in Flood Zone AE, which are oftentimes required to purchase flood insurance.

Norfolk's maritime festival
Known as the longest-running maritime festival in the nation, the Norfolk Harborfest is one of the most important celebrations of the city. Each year the festival opens with a sailing parade of over 200 ships and vessels cruising down the Elizabeth River. Additional activities include live entertainment such as acrobatics, strongman and pirate shows, a build-a-boat challenge, naval demonstrations and exhibits and fireworks displays. Other events include the Norfolk Waterfront Jazz Festival, the Norfolk Latino Music Festival, Nash Fest and Bayou Bon Vivant, which celebrates local Cajun art, food and music.

While one needs a car for groceries and shopping trips, many parts of Lakewood can be accessed by biking or walking. Public transit is available at Norfolk’s city center and includes the Norfolk Amtrak Station, the Elizabeth River Ferry, the Tide Light Rail and the Hamptons Roads Transit bus system.
