Waterfront residential community on Norfolk’s north side
When it comes to booming metropolitan areas in the United States, the residents of the Hampton Roads region in Virginia -- which encompasses Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Newport News -- know exactly what they have: a burgeoning territory of nearly 2 million people, tucked away in a charming collection of harbors, bays, cities and towns that has blossomed into an economically diverse and mighty region. Similarly, when it comes to neighborhoods, the residents of the Larchmont/Edgewater district on Norfolk's north side also know what they have: a beautiful, waterfront oasis of stately residences and tree-lined boulevards that seems unchanged by modern progress. There is scant evidence of commercialization within its borders. Rather, it is a neighborhood in almost every sense of the word, with row after row of classic homes and well-manicured lawns separated only occasionally by ornate churches, schools and public parks. “It’s close to downtown Norfolk’s amenities, but still has a suburban feel that’s hard to find here,” says Ashley Swindell, a Realtor with BHHS RW Towne Realty, who grew up in the neighborhood and who's been selling homes here for over a decade.
Rows of classic home styles
An almost entirely residential district, this neighborhood of over 2,000 homes is surrounded by water on three sides. Built mainly in the 20th Century, the homes favor colonial revival architecture, but there are several examples of Victorian and craftsman construction as well. “It’s not a master planned community, and people like the diverse styles they find here,” says Swindell. It’s an established, quiet residential district, with homes that typically sell for between $400,000 to $700,000. There are also apartments available in complexes along the Lafayette River on the neighborhood's east side.
Larchmont Elementary and Old Dominion University close by
Residents of the city are served by Norfolk Public Schools, including Larchmont Elementary School, which is in the neighborhood and gets a B grade from Niche. Students typically move on to Blair Middle School, which has a C grade, and Maury High School, which earns a B-plus. Students can also pursue opportunities at one of the district's specialized middle or high schools. At Larchmont/Edgewater’s southern border is Old Dominion University, a public research institution with an enrollment of nearly 25,000 students annually.
Bluestone Playground and Cambridge Crescent Park highlight the area’s recreation
As Larchmont/Edgewater gained its identity as a quiet residential haven in the early-to-mid-1900s, several neighborhood parks sprang up among its homes and schools. Bluestone Playground and Brick Park offer wide open green spaces for sports and recreational activities, with a children's playground being the added attraction at Bluestone. Cambridge Crescent Park is an open green space for dog owners who want to get some exercise with their canine pals. There are a number of other city and dog parks located within a few miles throughout the Norfolk area. The region features a distinct focus on military history, as evidenced not only by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, but also by attractions such as the Battleship Wisconsin, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum and the MacArthur Memorial, dedicated to U.S. military leader Douglas MacArthur.
Local shopping nearby and more retailers just a short drive away
Westside Produce and Provisions is a small grocer along Colley Avenue with locally-sourced goods. North of Larchmont/Edgewater along Granby Street is Midtown Shopping Center with access to Harris Teeter, a Walgreens Pharmacy and a Book Exchange. There are several restaurants close by, including D'Egg West for breakfast and Del Vecchios for pizza. “Coach House Bar & Grill is one of my favorites in the neighborhood too,” adds Swindell. “The owners are nice, and I see locals every time I’m in there.”
Robust network of highways and close public transit
A network of Virginia and interstate highways connect Norfolk to Newport News, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is a 17.6-mile toll facility that connects the Virginia mainland with the state's eastern shore, which leads north to Delaware, New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. Public transportation is available via bus, train and ferry services provided by Hampton Roads Transit, and airline travel is minutes away at Norfolk International Airport.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
