Treasurer of the Lake Whitehurst West Civic League, Christian Strange says, “Larrymore Lawns is a very old residential neighborhood with a lot of history. This community and the other neighborhoods we service are a family, and we make our voices heard and take care of our neighbors.”

20th-century homes with suburban charm

The homes in Larrymore Lawns range from sprawling single-story ranch-style homes to split-level houses, many built in the 20th century. A drive through the neighborhood will also show you quaint bungalows with expansive front yards ideal for gardening. Houses in Larrymore Lawns are affordable and the median home price is $285,000. The residential areas are within walking distance from the local shops and restaurants, which makes it a desirable place to live.

Neighborhood schools with academic legacies

Students can attend Larrymore Elementary School, a long-standing neighborhood school built in 1957. Additionally, St Pius X Catholic School is a private school that is a Virginia Designated Purple Star School for supporting military-connected students and families.

Lake Whitehurst West Civic League and the Norfolk Botanical Gardens

Lake Whitehurst West Civic League is the second-largest league in Norfolk and services several communities, including Larrymore Lawns. Join the league and learn all about their neighborhood events, such as their annual yard sale in May, summer picnic and holiday social. Strange says, “We have regular meetings that are well attended, and people are very concerned about making sure the neighborhood is in good shape and residents are taken care of.”

Make sure to visit the landmark Norfolk Botanical Gardens, less than three miles away. In this 175-acre garden, you can smell fresh roses and hydrangeas and learn all about the plants.

Retail shopping and locally owned restaurants with authentic flavors

For groceries, there is a Food Lion on East Little Creek Road, and Mi Calavera Latin Store & Butcher Shop is a Mexican grocery store selling a wide variety of Latin American cuisine and fresh cuts of meat. There is also an abundance of shopping destinations to enjoy in Larrymore Lawns, from franchises to local spots that the community loves. Wedgewood Plaza is home to Marshalls, Big Lots and Ellaz Bridal, a luxury bridal boutique. For an evening of dancing, The Banque Country Western is a local country spot for the last 50 years where you’ll find live music, pool and karaoke.

For lunch, head to, Salmich’s Burgers & Hoagies serving up sandwiches since 2016 and known for their generous-sized portions of meat. Sean Lone, Owner and Manager of Salmich’s Burgers & Hoagies, says, “People in Larrymore Lawns and all of Norfolk love our restaurant because since we are from Buffalo, you really can’t find what we serve here anywhere else.” Bel Air Pancake House is a neighborhood favorite where you can get a classic diner breakfast. For authentic Guatemalan cuisine, El Deportista is known for its pupusas and Burrito “El Gringo”. End your evening playing pool at Winners Sports Bar and hang with your neighbors, this cozy bar is characterized by its daily specials, friendly bartenders and live music. Strange exclaims, “People always talk about the long-standing Bel Air Pancake house and our local watering hole is Winner’s sports bar and it’s such a great place to go.”
