Park Place

19th-century homes along narrow streets
Narrow streets lined with sidewalks, streetlights, mature trees and closely spaced homes lie to the west of Granby Street in Park Place. The neighborhood’s 19th and 20th-century Queen Anne, victorian and colonial homes sit on deep lots, with their wide front porches looking out over shallow front lawns. Homes here tend to stay on the market for about a month and typically sell for between $300,000 to $500,000.Lafayette Park, Virginia Zoo and plenty more recreation
Residents of Park Place are spoiled for choice when it comes to nearby recreation. The Park Place Multi-Services Center is connected by a hallway to James Monroe Elementary School and provides residents with indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities. Students and community members alike enjoy the center’s basketball courts, soccer fields and playground. Less than a quarter mile away is the newly refurbished Munson Park. Inspired by input from Park Place’s youngsters, the playground won the award for “Best New Renovation/Addition to a Park” at the 64th annual Virginia Recreation and Park Society Conference in 2019. Munson Park’s ropes-based play course, accessible swings and walking paths make it a popular gathering place at the center of the neighborhood. The Virginia Zoo, home to more than 700 animals and 150 different species, is just across Granby Street on the banks of the Lafayette River. On a quiet day, residents may be able to hear the tigers all the way from Llewellyn Avenue. Lafayette Park is under a mile from the neighborhood, next to the Virginia Zoo. The picnic shelters and public restrooms available make the park a great place to hold events, from community-wide fundraisers to birthday parties. Sporty residents enjoy the park’s basketball and tennis courts, as well as the lighted baseball fields and kayak launch. The YMCA on Granby has several more amenities for members, including an outdoor pool, a gym and community rooms.Norfolk City Public Schools and Old Dominion University
Norfolk City Public Schools serves the neighborhood’s students. James Monroe Elementary School, which has a C-minus grade from Niche, is in the heart of the neighborhood, located within half a mile of most homes. Kids may then attend Blair Middle School, which gets a C grade, before transitioning to Maury High School, which earns a B-plus. The school district recently expanded its breakfast and lunch programs to include free meals each school day for all enrolled students. Old Dominion University, one of the largest colleges in Virginia with over 23,000 enrolled students, is located 1 mile northeast of Park Place.Colley Village, downtown’s retailers and local businesses
Colley Village is a nearby shopping center with a Food Lion and a Dollar General. More retailers can be found less than 2 miles south in downtown Norfolk, including the Waterside District and MacArthur Center. Residents who have worked up an appetite at the park can stroll over to the corner of Colonial Avenue to grab a bite at the Handsome Biscuit. This tiny, local restaurant is always packed with people enjoying creative takes on classic Southern fried chicken biscuits. There’s also Jikoni Cafe, which has been serving vegan dishes in Park Place for nearly 15 years.
