Beach getaway with classic home styles and amenities

Crashing waves and singing seagulls call residents to the Pinewell neighborhood, a beachside community near the Ocean View Beach shores. Norfolk commuters drive 8 miles to relax in their Tudor- or Federal-inspired homes or contemporary beach houses after a long day at work. Military members stationed at Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world, have a 7-mile drive to get on base from Pinewell. Mick Shaw, an experienced Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, says, “Pinewell is what I call Americana—an old, wonderful, well-established neighborhood formed in the postwar and post-depression that has a lot of great things to get into, including the golf course.” Being near the beach makes this neighborhood popular, but the local restaurants and nearby Ocean View Golf Course create an even bigger draw.

Soaking in the sun at the beach or Maple Park

Ocean View Beach welcomes residents and visitors to relax on the sand, swim in the water or search for seashells. A paved parking lot sits nearby where visitors can park their cars or golf carts before a day at the beach. “It’s a very, very walkable neighborhood; lots of jogging and dog walking to the beach,” Shaw says. Oceanview’s beaches span 7.3 miles of shoreline with access to the serene waters of the Chesapeake Bay, perfect for swimming, fishing, and kayaking.

The Ocean View Golf Course, another relaxation destination, waits for amateur and experienced golfers. Locals sign up for public tee times or become members to get a flat tee time charge. Golfers can play the full 18-hole course for a relaxing Sunday or practice for the Ocean View Golf Club Memorial Tournament. When the temperature drops, parents might skip a beach trip and take their kids to Community Beach Park. Children can climb around the playground equipment while their parents sit on the nearby benches.

Beach homes and classic single-family homes near Granby Street

Colonial-inspired beach houses sit close to the shore. Still, future residents can find Tudor-inspired homes with unique trim and one-bedroom condos in brick buildings like Ocean Pines Condominium. The beach houses often feature soft-colored siding, wrap-around porches and multi-car garages. Homes with Tudor-inspired design sport sloped roofs and brick siding. “The median price range for homes is now approaching $400,000, but home prices range from $400,000, $500,000 and even $600,000,” Shaw says. A handful of apartments and homes are available to rent for those who want to live close to the beach but aren’t ready to buy.

Enjoying music and family fun at Ocean View Beach

Ocean View Beach Park draws residents from all over Hampton Roads with its abundance of summertime festivals. No one has to wonder what to do on Friday nights with events like Reggae on the Bay, Ocean View Backyard BBQ and Family Fun & Movie Night. On Sundays, residents walk to the park to enjoy live music with the Big Bands on the Bay Summer Concert Series, which runs from May to September. Local bands play live music well into the night.

Chatting with neighbors at Oceanview Diner

Most beach towns have a know-your-neighbor atmosphere, and Pinewell is no different. Hungry residents often run into their neighbors at Oceanview Diner when they visit for breakfast or lunch. Those who want classic seafood dishes visit Our People’s Soulful Seafood. Friends meet up at The OV Beach Tavern to get drinks, catch the game or show off their karaoke skills.

When residents need extra groceries before friends and family come to visit, they stock up at the Harris Teeter on West Ocean View Avenue. Tienda La Tapatía 3 features a wide range of Latin American drinks and snacks for people to enjoy after hanging out on the beach.

Making history at Granby High

Parents send their kids to Ocean View Elementary before they transition to Northside Middle. Both schools earn Cs from Niche. Students at Granby High might have their poetry or artwork published in The Cupola, a literary journal that was recognized as a REALM First Class magazine in 2023. The varsity softball team made history in 2023 by taking the top spot in the 757Teamz Top 15, a ranking list put together by the Daily Press newspaper. Niche gives Granby High a B-minus. Ocean View Christian Academy, a private school offering kindergarten through 12th-grade classes, also sits in the middle of the neighborhood.

Commuting to the Naval Base or Downtown Norfolk

Drivers take U.S. Route 564 all the way into Downtown Norfolk when it's time to work. Slim sidewalks run throughout the neighborhood, giving residents a path to bike or walk to the grocery store or beach. The Downtown Norfolk Transit Center/Navy Exchange Mall bus route also connects Pinewell residents to Downtown Norfolk. Less than 7 miles away, airplanes fly in and out of Norfolk International Airport, where locals can go when they plan a trip to Tennessee, Georgia or Maryland. With the Naval Station Norfolk sitting close to Pinewell, residents might see and hear planes flying overhead every now and then.
