Just 5 miles north of Norfolk, Shadywood East is a small, woody community characterized by smaller homes perfect for first-time home buyers. Bordering the Hampton Roads Beltway, Shadywood East offers residents easy access to the highway with both Norfolk and Virginia Beach a quick drive away.

Many homes in Shadywood East were built in the 1940s, though the neighborhood also offers more contemporary properties built within the last decade. Ranch homes average around $200,000 in price while larger colonial or Cape Cod dwellings may sell upwards of $300,000. Homes in the neighborhood can sell in as little as two weeks after their original listing. Condos and apartments are also plentiful in Shadywood East such as Meadowood and Brittany Place Apartments. "It's a blue-collar, working neighborhood with older construction," says Realtor Tom Thrasher of Greenbrier Real Estate & Appraisals Inc. "What's been interesting in that particular area is there's been a process of a lot of rebuilding the neighborhood. In general terms, the teardowns and development have been a very good thing."

Neighborhood kids may attend schools under the Norfolk Public Schools umbrella. Children from pre-K to Grade 5 can go to Tanners Creek Elementary or Norview Elementary School while Norview Middle School serves students Grades 6 through 8. Local teenagers can attend the nearby Norview High School. Highlighted by its Leadership Center for Science and Engineering program and competitive athletics department, the high school currently earns a grade of B- on Niche.

For fresh groceries, head east on Norview Avenue and pick up essentials from the Food Lion at Bromley Shopping Center. Directly across North Military Highway, stop by Dollar Tree for other useful household necessities. You can also head north and visit the local Lidl or travel southeast to Norfolk Premium Outlets. Known for its restaurants, trendy boutiques and retail shops, the outlet mall also features a playground and a dog-friendly walking path around the small Lake Wright.

For a night out, Franco's serves as one of Shadywood East's more popular food destinations. Opened in 1985, the local Italian restaurant is known for its Chicken Parmigiana Sub and large, New York-style pizzas. Just off North Military Highway, Mona Lisa's Restaurant & Bar is another local hot spot thanks to its patio seating and large selection of Italian entrees, including calzones and veal parmesan subs.

Less than 2 miles north, residents can visit Norfolk Botanical Garden. At 158 acres, it is the largest botanical garden in Virginia and can display over 250,000 rose blooms during the year's warmer months. It also features a summer butterfly house and a "Garden of Lights" during the holidays. Residents are also just 4 miles south of Ocean View Beach, where beachgoers can sunbath, catch some waves and fish along the Ocean View Fishing Pier.

Frequent travelers in Shadywood East have excellent access to Norfolk International Airport, which sits just a mile from the neighborhood. Hampton Roads Transit bus route 15 also runs through the area with buses running every 30 minutes during peak hours. "There are other places in South Hampton Roads that you also have good access, but you can get on 264 easily and you can get to downtown fairly easy as well," said Thrasher.

With its low cost of living, accessibility to the highway and airport and proximity to downtown Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Shadywood East offers lots of little conveniences that regularly come in handy.
