The beach and the bays shape life in Willoughby

Willoughby is a Norfolk neighborhood on a peninsula shaped by storms that carved its distinctive landform between the Chesapeake and Willoughby bays. Outdoor recreation defines daily life here, whether you love to go boating and fishing or prefer relaxing on the sand. Housing is diverse and coastal in style, ranging from lower-priced condos to luxury waterfront properties. There are a few restaurants within the community and many more a short drive away. Willoughby’s laid-back beach-town atmosphere comes with quick access to Interstate 64 and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, making it easier to get to destinations around the region.

From small bungalows to large luxury coastal designs

Along the narrow residential streets of Willoughby, you’ll find a variety of single-family homes and condos built between the early 1900s and today. Quaint cottages, shingle-sided bungalows and ranch-style homes sit next to towering multistory coastal designs with expansive decks and scenic views. "In Willoughby, I do see more beach resort-style homes. You are going to see the big coastal beach-type houses," says Helen Makriyianis, a Realtor with Signature Homes. Waterfront properties along Willoughby Bay often have private docks and deep water access. Many properties are rentals. Only about 30% of residents are homeowners.

The tree-shaded Monkey Bottom Park offers a reprieve from the hot sun and has picnic tables and a playground. Seasonal events, from family-friendly movie nights to a summer concert series, take over Ocean View Beach Park. And you can tee off on an 18-hole layout at the public Ocean View Golf Course in Pinewell.

"The pier is a big draw. There's a restaurant there where you can rent out fishing poles. It's a great summer activity," Makriyianis says. More options are close by in West Ocean View, which has restaurants serving Mexican, American and Puerto Rican cuisine. It’s also where you can run a few errands, with Harris Teeter, Ocean View Hardware and other retailers.

The public transportation could use some work. There are not enough bus routes in my area. If I could do it all over again, I would live in Harrisonburg Virginia. Norfolk is not a bad place to live, however, i only foresee the area getting worse.
