Ironwood Golf Course, Ironwood Park and Shepard Dog Park
Ironwood Golf Course was designed by Roger Packard and laid out in a par 72 championship fashion. The golf course is integrated into the Ironwood neighborhood and features golf cart trails that cross neighborhood streets. Young residents can slide playground slides or play a baseball game at the field of Ironwood Park. Two miles south of Ironwood, residents can let their dogs run at Shepard Dog Park.Education from kindergarten to college
Young Ironwood students can attend kindergarten through fifth grade at Prairieland Elementary School, which earns an A-minus on Niche. For grades six through eight, students can attend Parkside Junior High School, which earns a B. The girls’ soccer team of Normal Community West High School has won four Big Twelve Conference Titles and twice qualified for the Illinois High School Association State Tournament. The high school earns a B-plus. Students don’t have to leave Bloomington-Normal for their secondary education since Illinois State University is 3 miles southeast and Illinois Wesleyan University is five miles south.Updated or outdated homes
Ironwood’s architectural landscape is characterized by colonial revival, ranch- and traditional-style homes. “Usually, when a home in Ironwood comes up for sale, it’s either been fully updated, or it’s a little outdated,” Lockenour says. “That’s because a lot of the homes were built in the 90s.” Homes without renovations typically sell between $240,000 and $350,000, while fully updated homes sell between $350,000 and $550,000. The median home price is $338,500, down 1% from the previous year.Normal summer festivals
Ironwood events are limited to garage and yard sales, but Normal offers residents a full calendar of events. Spring brings a live music concert series to the area with Normal LIVE, which lasts from late spring to early fall. Late summer is also a time to celebrate the city’s agricultural roots with the Sweet Corn Circus, which takes place in August.Interstate travel accessible in the neighborhood
Interstate 55 lines the southern edge of Ironwood, putting the neighborhood 134 miles from downtown Chicago. The neighborhood is also accessible by Northtown Road to the north and North Linden Street, North 1600 East Road and Veterans Parkway from the south. Ironwood’s streets are lined with sidewalks, giving residents miles of paved pathways to get their steps in. The southwest corner of Ironwood is less than a mile from the closest Connect Transit bus stop at Rockingham Drive and Kenwood Court, and the southeast corner is three miles from its closest stop at Landmark Drive and Parkway Plaza Drive.Schnucks Normal groceries and local beer
Depending on preference, Lockenour says Ironwood residents have their choice of grocery stores. “They’re right next to Schnucks Normal on Bradford Lane,” she says. “And there’s a Walmart down on Greenbriar Drive.” To dine out, residents can head two and a half miles south to DESTIHL Brewery and Beer Hall, a local brewery holding a restaurant with American pub fare like salads, pizzas and burgers. For some shopping, residents can head four miles south to Eastland Mall, which holds stores like Old Navy and Spencer’s.
