A variety of activities, homes and restaurants
Old North Normal is a diverse neighborhood of homes sitting next to the Illinois State University campus. “It used to be almost exclusively professors and other people from the university,” says Mark Huffman, owner of Old North Normal-based Mark Huffman Creative. “but now it’s a real mix of people.” The neighborhood is conveniently located near Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University, two local libraries, The Normal Theater and a handful of other cultural amenities. Homes in the neighborhood also add variety, having been built from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s and reflecting the many styles popular over those decades.
North Main Street and The Circle
Around campus, Fusion Brew offers fresh coffee on South Main Street, and chains like Chipotle are popular lunch spots for students and faculty. Roughly two miles east of the Illinois State University campus, Veterans Parkway hosts a thriving commercial corridor.
Less than a mile southeast of the neighborhood, The Circle serves as a green space hub for local shops, restaurants and other points of interest. Around The Circle, residents can pick up coffee at The Coffeehouse, enjoy a pint at Maggie Miley’s or have brunch at Medici in Normal. The area also holds a local art gallery — University Galleries — and the Children’s Discovery Museum, which teaches kids with hands-on educational exhibits. Film buffs will enjoy The Normal Theater, which Huffman describes as a restored art-deco theater “that mostly shows vintage and classic films.”
Irish bar, Maggie Miley's, has over 20 beers on tap.

Top grades for a complete educational pipeline
Post-secondary students have a few options within three miles: Heartland Community College, Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan University. The oldest public university in the state, Illinois State University, began as a normal school, or teacher training school. Today, it is known for its extensive research activities as well.
Depending on their location, Old North Normal’s elementary school students can attend Glenn Elementary School to the south, or Fairview Elementary School to the north. Glenn earns a B-plus on Niche, while Fairview earns a B-minus. The neighborhood’s middle school students attend Chiddix Junior High School, which earns a B-plus. At B-plus-rated Normal Community West High School, the girls soccer team has won four Big Twelve Conference titles.
Normal Community West High School offers plenty of AP and honors courses.

Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games
Since 1977, Illinois State University has hosted the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games, bringing thousands of athletes and volunteers to the area each summer. One of the area’s big events, Huffman says, is Illinois State University’s Homecoming. Each fall, the celebration welcomes back alumni with the Town and Gown 5K, the Homecoming Parade, tons of tailgating and smaller festivities.
Homes that mix age and style
Huffman says the ages and styles of homes in Old North Normal are a mix of many. “On Normal Avenue, many homes were built around the turn of the last century. As you move further north, the houses get newer.” On the neighborhood's south side, it's possible to come across older Victorian homes — built as far back as 1870 — that have been carefully restored to honor original craftsmanship. Homes further north range from ranch-style homes to larger colonial-style homes that date from the early to mid-1900s. Smaller, single-story homes sell as low as $125,000, while larger, two-story homes sell as high as $325,000. The median price is $191,000, up 8% from the previous year.

The Constitution Trail and Fairview Park
One of Huffman’s most frequented parts of Old North Normal is Bloomington-Normal’s Constitution Trail. The 37-mile paved trail connects to neighborhoods all over the metro area and runs along Old North Normal’s eastside. “I walk that trail every day,” Huffman says. “Walking to Uptown is nothing because you can hop on that trail and walk it all the way up. It’s so convenient.” Just across Main Street, Fairview Park offers residents an outdoor pool with waterslides, a skatepark and Illinois State University’s Weibring Golf Club, the official course of the university’s golf team.
