Grassy front lawns and private driveways leading to garages lend Parkside a suburban feel. Recreation and activities for Parkside residents

Maxwell Park is a 75-acre green space between the junior high and high schools. It has a playground, a disc golf course and several sports fields and courts. Illinois State University’s Webring Golf Club is along Gregory Street, with an 18-hole course that is open to the public. Families can visit the Children’s Discovery Museum, about 2 miles east, where there are play-based learning exhibits and a maker space. Sports fans can watch the ISU Redbirds play tennis at the courts just north of Parkside, and the CEFCU Arena hosts ISU basketball games.

The neighborhood’s three schools are located along North Parkside Road. Parkside Elementary School earns a B-minus on Niche and Parkside Junior High gets a B; both are within a pretty short walk for residents on the western edge of Parkside. Normal West High School receives a B-plus. High school students can compete in extracurricular sports and activities, including golf, lacrosse and cheerleading. With Illinois State University about a mile east and Illinois Wesleyan University less than 3 miles away, residents are close to continued learning and employment opportunities.

Year-round events in Uptown Normal

Concerts, parades and other events take place in Uptown Normal throughout the year. In October, the Sugar Creek Arts Festival brings performers and artists together for a day-long gathering. Santa makes an annual visit to the Uptown Station in December. In August, locals can watch performances by pro wrestlers and acrobats at the Sweet Corn Circus.

Several travel options for Parkside residents

Interstates 55 and 74 run about half a mile west of the community, and the Rivian plant is around 3 miles west. Connect Transit buses pick up riders along West College and Cottage avenues, enabling car-free travel to Bloomington, the ISU campus and Amtrak’s Uptown Station. Emergency care is available through the Carle BroMenn Medical Center, less than 3 miles away, and the Central Illinois Regional Airport is approximately 8 miles away.

Carl’s Ice Cream, Westside BloNo and retail options

Neighborhood sidewalks lead to a small shopping plaza with hair salons and Carl’s Ice Cream. Carl’s serves hamburgers and other diner fare, as well as a wide variety of ice cream. The Westside BloNo is a few miles south. This entertainment and dining complex has a high-tech driving range and duckpin bowling, and it is home to the BloNo Pizza Co. and Westside Smoke. The on-site bars have a large selection of craft beer and whiskey.The closest grocery store is Jewel-Osco, about 1 mile south. There are a few boutiques and restaurants in Uptown Normal, just east of ISU. The town’s commercial hot spot is at the intersection of East College Avenue and Old Route 66, where there are restaurants and a variety of retail chains, including Petco, Yankee Candle and Target.
