North Bend is a small coastal city that skirts the eastern edge of Coos Bay. Surrounded by the beauty of the Oregon Coast, it acts as a gateway to a variety of outdoor recreation areas ranging from state parks to national forests to Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, all the while offering the conveniences of a compact, close-knit community. North Bend got its start as a port town serving mining and timber interests in the mid-19th century. These days, the local economy revolves around the tourism and shipping industries—the Port of Coos Bay is the largest deep-draft port between San Francisco and Seattle and specializes in lumber taken from the forests of western Oregon. “North Bend is surrounded on three sides by the bay, and the dunes are just across the water,” says local Realtor Lorna Lewis of Re/Max South Coast, who has worked in the area for over a decade. “We have so much to offer in the way of outdoor activities, from boating to hiking to off-roading in the dunes.”
