The famous house of Tony Soprano from the hit TV show is eight minutes from Cedar Grove.
A sought-after North Jersey suburb known for affluent lifestyles
The quiet North Jersey suburb of North Caldwell has a strong reputation as a desirable neighborhood, with the New Jersey Monthly Magazine calling it one of the top 10 places in the state to live, and Bloomberg listing it as one of the richest towns in America. This tranquil town sits just 40 minutes outside New York City and 10 minutes from the nationally recognized Montclair University, while brimming with gorgeous homes that have helped shape its pristine image. But in the pop culture world, Caldwell’s most famous character is Tony Soprano, the main character of the HBO television show “The Sopranos”, shot in North Caldwell and other North Jersey communities from 1999 to 2007. That fun fact really ties together the distinct local character: historic and established enough to generate small town community, but also containing enough modern aspects to feel entertaining.
Classic styles like colonials starting at $700,000
North Caldwell does feature homes as monumental as Tony Soprano’s mansion, but there are plenty of classic styles, too. Colonials, ranches and Cape Cods are frequently seen, giving the streets a vintage look – evocative of the neighborhood’s mass suburbanization during the 1950s and 1960s. Prices range between $700,000 and $1 million, making this one of the priciest locales in the state. However, there’s always the chance for homebuyers to find outliers, like colonial-style cottages that sell for $525,000. Another notable aspect is the neighborhood’s greenery. Properties tend to be surrounded by tall deciduous trees and mature evergreens, enhancing the overall coziness.

Golf at Green Brook Country Club, plus interfaith events around town
While private, the Green Brook Country Club is considered a pillar of the community. The golf course offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and countryside of North Jersey, and the club in general is loved by many families for the summer camp programs it hosts for local children. Adjacent to Borough Hall is a concentration of outdoor activities for all ages to enjoy. Here, residents can lounge in the public pool, engage in a tennis match, play baseball or run across the soccer field. The Hilltop Reservation, located at the southeast corner of North Caldwell, is popular for hikers and birdwatchers alike, and also has its own cultural history as a filming location for the 1997 film “Cop Land.”
Dr. Rhonda Myers, who grew up in Bergen County and is now interim pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Verona, says interfaith events also bring out the community. The church sits near The Hilltop Reservation, as does the Islamic Center of Verona. “Plus, there’s the Verona Community Center, which is always holding events of some kind,” she says.
North Caldwell also features multiple tennis courts adjacent to Borough Hall.

Groceries at West Caldwell Shopping Center
North Caldwell is primarily residential, so residents typically shop for groceries at the ShopRite in the West Caldwell Shopping Center, which also contains Walgreens and other convenient shops. Bloomfield Avenue on the south side is lined with eateries. Places for coffee pop up frequently, whether that’s Turkish coffee at Bloom Cakes & Bakery, or a specialty drink from Jola Coffee like Stroopwafel latte – which blends cookie batter, cinnamon and caramel. Pizza places and Italian restaurants are of course popular, as one might expect for a place that portrayed “local resident” Tony Soprano enjoying Italian American dishes throughout the series.

North Caldwell residents can conveniently access NYC via train from Montclair, NJ.
Take a bus to a train in nearby Montclair
North Caldwell residents live equidistant from both Highway 56 and Interstate 280, facilitating travel into New York City and Hudson County. North Caldwell is only a 40-minute drive outside New York. Bloomfield Avenue is a major thoroughfare on the south side for getting to and from shopping or dining, but Myers points out that commuters may use this route, too. “There are bus stops along Bloomfield, which commuters can pick up to reach the train station in nearby Montclair,” she says. “People who work in New York like that this area offers a relatively easy commute.”
