Lively, historic North Charleston community anchored by expansive circular park
Park Circle brings North Charleston to life with a burgeoning food and beverage scene, historic homes and the world’s largest inclusive playground. It’s a waterside enclave a few minutes from the banks of the city’s Cooper River, named for the tree-lined driving loop at the center of town. The occasional train whistle from the nearby Amtrak sets the offbeat tone for Park Circle’s artsy mixed-feel atmosphere, featuring a walkable blend of charming residential streets, natural scenery and an edgy commercial corridor. “It’s an eclectic area – uncommon compared to other parts of North Charleston,” says Zelda Bryant, broker-in-charge of Bryant Real Estate Group.

Eclectic mix of historic styles and newer custom home designs
This isn’t a neighborhood of new developments with sidewalk-lined streets and stylistic uniformity. Park Circle architecture spans the gamut of early 20th-century styles, from cottages to ranch homes, bungalows and Southern farmhouse designs. Prices start around $250,000 for a simple 900-square-foot cottage and climb to $800,000 for a custom spot with an extra bedroom or two and updated interiors. The average home sells for $450,000, which is notably higher than most surrounding neighborhoods. Park Circle buyers should be aware that the CAP Index gives the area a 6 out of 10 crime score, which is higher than the national average of 4. Crime has historically been a concern in the North Charleston Area, but the local police department recently reported a dip in both violent and property crime in 2024, according to ABC 4 News.

Beers and beats at Holy City Brewing
"The dining and nightlife scene has really taken off in the past few years," says A.J. Hanson, Realtor at Mave and Market Real Estate. Park Circle’s busy East Montague Avenue is a trendy enclave of businesses, packed with some of Charleston’s best bars, boutiques and eateries. LoLA is a local favorite, serving Cajun-style dishes and drinks on its dog-friendly outdoor patio. Charleston’s beloved Holy City Brewing is also in town, hosting visitors for live music, trivia and craft beer. On St. Patrick’s Day, Park Circle’s downtown area buzzes with visitors for the annual block party and parade, the largest in the Lowcountry for 20 years running. "You will often run into your friends and neighbors out and about walking their pups or taking their kids for a stroll to the park or for some ice cream," Hanson says. Homeowners here can also run errands at the Tanger Outlets, a 3-mile drive away, beside a Walmart Supercenter and Sam’s Club, or stop at the Food Lion across the interstate.

Inclusive play park and riverside concert venue
The neighborhood’s namesake park's biggest attraction is its massive playground, designed for kids and adults of all abilities. Locals also head to Park Circle for popular community events like the North Charleston Farmer’s Market, the North Charleston Arts Fest and a holiday tree lighting ceremony. Charleston’s scenic Riverfront Park is also nearby, its waterside grounds dotted with memorial statues and public art sculptures. It’s the local go-to for a scenic walk or run along the Cooper River. Riverside Park has a stacked calendar of events, including the High Water Festival, a prominent two-day live music event that brings 15,000 people into North Charleston every year. "With the festival's success, Park Circle and Charleston in general have been placed back on the music map for many large artists that used to pass us by for more convenient cities off Interstate 95," Hanson says.

Take a golf cart or pedicab into town
While the community is known for its walkability, Hanson says "Everything that Park Circle has to offer is walkable from most parts of the neighborhood, many residents opt for golf cart rides around town and there is even a local who runs his own Pedicab service on weekends." Residents live roughly 7 miles north of downtown Charleston, which is typically a 20- —to 30-minute ride depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. Most Park Circle locals are drivers, but the Charleston Area Regional Transit Authority (CARTA) buses make frequent stops throughout the neighborhood for a car-free commute.
