North Chelmsford’s small town with big amenities

The Town of Chelmsford’s northern sector is its own unincorporated village with many amenities separate from the rest of the area. Known as North Chelmsford, the community has its own public buildings and services, such as fire stations and libraries, though it is run by the same government and served by the same school district as the rest of the town. “Chelmsford is well known for having easy access to Boston, the Atlantic Coastline and the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont. Bordering the city of Lowell is fantastic, as it offers affordable culture, theater, sporting events and so much more. It’s so close to everything, yet it has a small-town feel,” says Realtor Nancy Rogers with LAER Realty Partners. Rogers has been selling in the greater Lowell area for 38 years and raised her family here. “Compared to some of our surrounding towns, it does give buyers more options without losing the charm and quality,” she says. Anchored by a historic town center, North Chelmsford provides convenience and community, with quality public schools, a growing restaurant scene near Vinal Square and diverse outdoor activities.

Shopping and dining opportunities at Vinal Square and beyond

The epicenter of North Chelmsford is Vinal Square, where Princeton Street turns into Tyngsboro Road. It features many local businesses, services, shops, restaurants and a town green with a monument for a local World War I hero. Rogers says that the “restaurant choices keep growing, and we have all varieties of food establishments.” Some local spots include Rosie’s Diner, which is a family favorite here that opens early each morning and serves comfort food through breakfast and lunch. For dinner, residents can stop at Zesty’s Pizza for Italian fare. Local shops near Vinal Square include Village Consignment, which is a popular second-hand, antique and collectible store. The closest big-box options are within 2 miles at Market Basket or at Hannaford and Walmart, which sit near chain restaurants at Drum Hill Shopping Center.

Parks, beaches and hiking in North Chelmsford

Freeman Lake has a waterfront park and beach where visitors can go swimming when weather permits. When Chelmsford Public Schools are off for summer break, lifeguards are on duty at Freeman Lake Beach, and there are rope float buoys to ensure swimmers stay in designated areas. From the lake, locals can walk to Varney Playground, a Medieval-style wooden play place for children. North Chelmsford is also home to the Southwell Nature Trail, a small hiking area that bumps up against the Merrimack River, and Rogers mentions that bike paths run through town. Neighbors can also get some fresh air at Oak Hill Conservation Area or take their furry friends to the Chelmsford Dog Park.

North Chelmsford Colonials, Cape Cods and condos

Home prices here are typically lower than other bedroom communities within relative proximity of Boston. Colonial architecture is the most common style found in North Chelmsford, and these properties often sell between $600,000 and $1 million. Smaller builds, including Cape Cods and ranch styles, can be found, as well, and are more likely to fall between $400,000 to $600,000. Multifamily duplexes and condos are also popular, often selling in the $400,000 range. Many homes sit back from the streets with modest front lawns, and driveways and garages are common. Because most of the residential streets do not feature sidewalks, the neighborhood is heavily car dependent, with walkable areas in the town center and parks.
