Development in North Fayette Township turned it into a commercial hub

Though North Fayette Township was established in the 1800s, it’s only within the last few decades that it has evolved into a modern Pittsburgh suburb with high-traffic shopping centers. “It used to be an area that was filled with trees and brush, but over a number of years, there had been a lot of new development,” says Diane McConaghy, a Realtor and an associate broker with Re/Max Select Realty, who has over 10 years of experience. “Not only residential, but stores and restaurants as well.” Several large shopping centers offer department stores, big-box retailers and dozens of restaurants, while homes on quiet residential streets are zoned for award-winning schools.

The Mall at Robinson and The Pointe at North Fayette draw shoppers

Several shopping centers on the eastern side of the township make the area a destination for running errands. The Mall at Robinson is anchored by Macy’s, JCPenney and Dick’s Sporting Goods, while Walmart Supercenter and Target draw shoppers to The Pointe at North Fayette. “Shopping is a big draw out there,” McConaghy says. “There’s a Sam’s Club, and anytime you go past there, it’s totally packed.” Shoppers can stop by The Yard for gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup. The local chain also offers a full brunch menu in an industrial-style setting with exposed brick walls and ductwork. Nearby, Burgatory offers burgers, milkshakes and cocktails.

The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, Donaldson Park and township trails

Donaldson Park has a full range of athletic amenities near the center of the township; four baseball diamonds and a soccer field sit across from a pair of tennis courts and a basketball court, with a dog run nearby. Two significant rail trails carve through the township as well. The Montour Trail stretches for almost 50 miles and connects to the Panhandle Trail, which runs from West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle and reaches into the suburbs of Steel City.
The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden sprawls across the eastern side of the township, consisting of a dogwood meadow, a pollinator garden and Asian and European woodlands. Storybook cottages and stone structures are scattered throughout the gardens, among vibrant blooms, ponds covered with lily pads and whimsical, rotating art installations. The gardens offer educational programs for kids and adults, and each December the gardens twinkle with immersive light displays during the Dazzling Nights event.
