Suburban neighborhood with midcentury homes
Set about 15 miles northeast of Downtown Sacramento, the established suburb of Larchmont Village is primarily residential with a few modern conveniences strewn throughout. Midcentury ranch-style homes sit north and south of Elkhorn Boulevard, which splits the neighborhood. Streets here are usually quiet, though traffic tends to get heavier along Watts Avenue to the west. Area schools are involved with the community and neighborhood parks offer recreational opportunities. Residents here also enjoy access to Interstate 80 and regional transit options, and shops and restaurants are a short trip away.

Lower-end housing prices
Midcentury and contemporary ranch-style homes line the streets of Larchmont Village. Built between the 1950s and ‘70s, these homes typically sit on up to quarter-acre lots with three to five bedrooms and shrubs or flowerbeds lining front walkways. Some driveways here are wide enough for two cars and a boat or RV, and lead to two-car garages; wooden fences separate properties and some front yards are enclosed with chain-link fences. Mature trees provide shade for most of the neighborhood. Prices range from about $240,000 to $595,000 depending on the number of bedrooms; homes on the higher end have typically been renovated. Antelope is a manufactured home community in the neighborhood's northern end, where prices range from $60,000 to $180,000.

Game design and music production at Highlands High School
Kids can attend Twin Rivers Unified district schools, including Village Elementary School, which serves kindergarten through Grade 8 and earns a C from Niche. At B-minus-rated Highlands High School, students interested in careers in game design or digital music production can take these electives or enroll in the Career and Technical Education program. Kids can also apply for the lottery to attend Creative Connections Arts Academy (CCAA), a B-plus charter school for kindergarten through Grade 12 with an expanded arts curriculum. "The CCAA has an active PTO that just won our North Highlands Narrative prize for positive figures in the community," says Kayla Thayer, recreation supervisor with North Highland's Recreation and Parks District. "The PTO does a bunch of fundraising for school supplies, hosts regular family nights and really makes a great impact on the community."

Holiday fun at the Kay F. Dahill Community Center
Seasonal events, including holiday festivities, take place at Freedom Park and nearby Kay F. Dahill Community Center. Thayer says December is the area’s most active month. “There’s breakfast with Santa, a holiday market where kids can buy donated gifts for a dollar and the Rockin' Around the Neighborhood event where we pass out candy canes and toys in the North Highland neighborhoods.” The Holiday Extravaganza and Tree Lighting, held at the community center, features the Grinch, a gingerbread house and a sugar cookie decorating contest; a skating rink is also available here with a hot cocoa bar.
