North Kansas City is a small city within a city

Just across the Missouri River from downtown Kansas City is North Kansas City — a vibrant, artistic community offering a unique intertwining of urban, suburban and industrial vibes. Containing a myriad of acclaimed locally owned eateries, shops and community parks, North Kansas City is much more than just a large neighborhood. It's a city within a city. "We are what we call an enclave city, which means we are fully surrounded by the city of Kansas City proper, but we're our own city," says North Kansas City Deputy City Administrator Kim Nakahodo. "It's a city that's like a giant neighborhood."

Locally owned businesses and restaurants dominate Armour Road

North Kansas City contains numerous restaurants and businesses inspired by the area's blue-collar history. Many of them are local establishments operated by longtime locals. "We are only 4 square miles. However, in those 4 square miles, we have over 1,000 businesses, and most of them are family-owned. We don't have a whole lot of what I would call 'big-box' here," Nakahodo says. "When you go to a bar or restaurant here, or a business, everything is local. We are what I would call hyper-local, and that's what I love about it." Iron District — a retail and food fortress known for its colorful shipping containers — houses several food and drink vendors including Taco Tank and Meltbox, which serves specialty ice cream. On Armour Road is Chappell's Restaurant & Sports Museum, revered by sports fanatics for its inventory of historic sports memorabilia and, of course, its robust menu of American comfort foods including burgers and chicken wings. Armour Road is also lined with independent retail shops and small businesses alongside chain restaurants, convenience stores and the historic Screenland Armour Theatre. To make a home-cooked meal, residents can gather ingredients from the Save A Lot on Burlington Street.

Bungalows and ranch-style homes sit among newer apartment complexes

North Kansas City is growing rapidly with the development of large apartment complexes throughout the region. North of Armour Street, however, is a sea of single-family homes constructed as early as the 1920s. Bungalows with Craftsman elements are prevalent, though smaller ranch-style builds and properties with Tudor accents are popular as well. Newer townhouses can also be found toward the north side at Erie Park. Smaller homes under 1,000 square feet often price between $100,000 and $300,000 while larger properties with four or more bedrooms top out closer to $500,000. The housing market in North Kansas City is very competitive with many homes taking as little as two to three weeks to sell.

Macken Park is a hub for both athletes and lovers of the arts

North Kansas City locals have several community parks just a stone's throw away. William E. Macken Park is on the north side and serves as a haven for athletes thanks to its baseball fields and tennis courts. The park also hosts the annual Arts in the Park Festival, which features live music, food trucks and dozens of local artists and vendors. Just north of Macken Park is Waggin' Trail Dog Park, offering separate play areas for large and small breeds. During the warmer months, kids enjoy Dagg Park to beat the heat at the splash pad and play at the jungle gym. ROKC, meanwhile, attracts climbers and adventure seekers toward the south side on Howell Street.
