North Madison offers recreation and peaceful living by Lake Erie
North Madison's main attraction is its access to Lake Erie. Cottage rentals and private lakehouses line the shore, so people can spend their days boating, fishing and admiring the view. The neighborhood is also inside a well-known wine region, further making it a destination for travelers. While visitors may come and go, permanent residents enjoy the tranquility of quiet residential streets and ample natural spaces. "I like to say trees make some of the best neighbors," says Michael Warren, a Madison native and Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. Mature trees shade diverse homes and grassy lawns, and locals are never more than a few miles from parks, trails and waterfront access.

People enjoy the outdoors at parks, lakeside beaches and golf courses
Recreation is abundant, especially near Lake Erie. People enjoy walking along the shoreline, fishing for steelhead trout and swimming at Madison Township Park, which has a public beach and a small boat dock. Every August, the park hosts the annual Light Up the Park event, where craft vendors sell homemade goods, live bands fill the air with music and locals enjoy food truck fare. At dusk, the sky lights up with a fireworks display. Kids play together at Tuttle Park's playground, while golfers practice their swing at Erie Shores Golf Course or Madison Country Club. "There are also tons of different hiking trails around here, from parks with paved paths to dirt trails surrounded by woods," Warren says. "It's much more involved in nature than walking on a sidewalk." Arcola Creek Park's forest trail leads to a small beach where people collect uniquely shaped driftwood and sea glass. Geneva State Park's trails accommodate year-round activity, from snowmobiling and cross-country skiing to hunting.

Homes have diverse architecture, lakefront views and shoreline protections
North Madison has several subdivisions. Although each is distinctly named, many sections share similar characteristics, like large grass lawns, mature trees and basketball hoops overlooking driveways. Architectural styles vary from ranch-style houses and bungalows to new traditional homes, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals. Lakefront homes typically have custom designs, larger lots and private docks. Prices usually range between $100,000 and $350,000, but lakehouses cost between $500,000 and $750,000, occasionally reaching $1 million.
While Lake Erie views are a coveted amenity, shoreline erosion has been a longtime concern. Many parts of the lakefront have seawalls and stone breakwaters to slow erosion. "The lake is a little bit lower than it's been in the past five or 10 years, but buyers should absolutely make sure there is erosion control in place when looking for a lakefront home," Warren says. "If it's not there, you need to factor that into your cost decision."
Lake Houses in North Madison often look modest in the front and stunning in the back, as they are built to take advantage of life on Lake Erie.

Local restaurants range from casual diners to luxury wineries
The neighborhood has several locally owned restaurants and small businesses. Madison Family Restaurant is known for its breakfast buffet, salad bar and themed all-you-can-eat nights. People relax and enjoy cocktails on the outdoor patio at The Wagon Wheel Bar & Grill. Two doors down, Karen's Holiday is a favorite for pizza, soft-serve ice cream and sub sandwiches. "There are also a ton of wineries. It's a huge industry in our area since we're in the Grand River Valley wine region," Warren says. Most wineries are farther inland in Madison Township, but Vincent William Wine along the lakeshore is easily accessible. A vineyard grows beside the winery's grand estate, which features a luxury French country inn, upscale wine bar and sprawling waterfront views. Da'bates Madison Market has a small grocery selection, but larger grocery stores and shopping centers are along Highway 20.
