Captain Stephen Olney Memorial Park
Historically Italian community where new people are moving in
In Geneva, people eat breakfast at a box car diner and go home to bungalows and ranch-style houses on sloped suburban streets. This North Providence neighborhood draws new residents with its affordability, quiet lifestyle and convenient location near two major Rhode Island roadways. “Historically, North Providence was an older Italian community, but that’s starting to turn over. Younger folks are starting to come in,” says Ryan Pickering with JPAR-Premier Destination Realty in Providence. “It’s pretty central, and it’s a lot more affordable than Providence and some of the neighboring communities.”
Typical Houses
Starter homes on enclosed sloped streets
Residential construction happened in Geneva throughout the 20th century. Raised ranch-style homes, multifamily houses and new colonials sit next to each other on grassy quarter-acre lots with bushes, trees and wooden fences on enclosed suburban roads. Prices range from $180,000 to $548,000. The average home value is $341,000.
Geneva Diner
Eggs for breakfast and lemonade in the afternoon
Route 15, also known as Mineral Spring Avenue, is the main commercial thoroughfare in Geneva. Chain eateries like Starbucks and Dunkin and retail stores like Pet Supplies Plus have a presence here. Dimmed blue and purple lights flood the dining room at Jacky’s Galaxie and Sushi Bar, a popular local restaurant known for its Pan-Asian cuisine. Across the street at the Social, people eat pizza and sip old fashioneds. In a boxcar on nearby Douglas Avenue is the Geneva Diner, which opened right after World War II as a diner trailer. Today it bills itself as a cozy 1950s-style diner with a hint of Latin flair. Near the diner is Del’s Lemonade, a Rhode Island institution selling frozen drinks. True Rhode Islanders drink Del’s by shaking the cup and sipping straight from it. Anyone drinking it through a straw will stick out like a sore thumb. The nearby North Providence Marketplace shopping center also features a tenant mix of some of the top names in modern retail, and neighbors can shop for groceries at the nearby Shaw’s supermarket. “North Providence is an extremely connected community,” says Pickering. “It’s one of those communities where everybody knows the mayor, and the mayor is very well connected. It’s an everybody knows everybody kind of town.”
Captain Stephen Olney Memorial Park
Swimming, hiking and story time for the little ones
Hikes, picnics and baseball games happen in Geneva at Captain Stephen Olney Memorial Park. Named for Revolutionary War veteran and general assembly member Stephen Olney, the park has a paved trail for walking and jogging, a playground for kids and a field. Olney’s house, which came online in 1802 and is on the National Register of Historic Places, sits next to the park. Kids take swim lessons at the indoor North Providence Pool & Fitness Center, and adults take advantage of its weight room and yoga classes. Book clubs, movie nights and toddler story time happen at the North Providence Union Free Library.

Getting to Boston, Providence and Worcester
Our Lady of Fatima Hospital sits on the south side of the neighborhood. The hospital offers emergency services, behavioral health and cancer treatment. Geneva sits down the road from U.S. Route 44, which runs west to Connecticut, and Route 146, a state highway connecting Providence with Worcester, Massachusetts. Downtown Providence is 10 minutes away by car, and driving to Boston takes just over an hour. Train service to Boston is available from the Providence or Pawtucket/Central Falls stations, each about 15 minutes away.
