Green spaces and modern conveniences

Known by locals as "The Small Community with a Big Heart," North Riverside has maintained its rural roots with a 21st century upgrade. North Riverside is intermixed with green space, whether it be community parks or the dense trees of McCormick Woods.

Brick foursquares and cottages in west Chicago

Here, wide sidewalks and large spreads of decorated lawns tucked away from busy main roads give the impression of small-town atmosphere. Houses in North Riverside tend to be established, with many built between the 1920s and ‘70s. Most homes are brick, with ranch-style homes sitting next to American foursquares and roomy bungalows and this vintage style helps seal the impression of long-standing community. The neighborhood’s average home value is $325,000, and houses have between three and five bedrooms and sit on small lots. Homebuyers with budgets of $500,000 and higher will find multi-story builds with 2,500 square feet. "We have a really close-knit community here, and a lot of the residents work in the public sector," says Karen Arndt, a local Realtor who has lived in the area for decades. "The community is multi-generational, with lots of people who grew up here eventually buying their own home in the neighborhood. We also have a great public works department, with a government that is invested in the community and listens to issues raised by the residents."

A-rated Riverside schools

"One of the reasons that the home prices remain elevated in North Riverside is the amazing school district," Arndt says. A.F. Ames Elementary School serves 450 of the area’s young learners and has a 15-1 student-to-teacher ratio. L.J. Hauser Junior High School is the 23rd best public middle school for teachers in Illinois, according to Niche. Older learners can attend Riverside Brookfield High School, which falls in Illinois’ top 50 public high schools. High Schoolers can consider a number of fine arts courses, including studio music production, chamber choir and symphonic marching band. The school also provides over 40 extracurricular offerings, from color guard and orchesis to clubs centered around skiing and fishing.

Living memorials and miles of wooded trails

Dating back to 1893, the Riverside Golf Club is a long-standing organization that engulfs the center of the neighborhood. It’s a well-landscaped and visually striking 18-hole course on 125 acres, with an attached entertainment area that features dining, live music, and holiday events. Slightly east of the golf course you’ll find Commons Park. With two beautiful ponds that locals use for ice skating in the winter and “Living Memorials” – trees planted and benches installed in memory of loved ones – it’s a peaceful sight. Additionally, there’s a playground, ballfield, and pavilions for picnicking, making it a staple park in the community’s day-to-day life. Walkers and bikers can use the Salt Creek Trail System, which can be accessed at the corner of 26th Street and 9th Avenue. The trails span 27 miles from the Brookfield Zoo, located just south of the neighborhood to Busse Woods Forest Preserve in Rolling Meadows.
