Historical villages maintaining a rural lifestyle
North Smithfield was settled as a farming community in 1666 and officially became a township in 1871. This Rhode Island town comprises several historic villages such as Forestdale, Slatersville and Primrose. Though farming isn't a prominent industry in the town today, the rural lifestyle is still visible in North Smithfield's numerous land lots, historic farmhouses and colonial and Cape Cod homes, many of which were built after World War II.
A mix of new construction and older builds
Walking through North Smithfield reveals the town's age and its styles. In the more rural central and south areas like Primrose, residents drive along narrow, winding roads with tilled earth and cornfields to either side, along with new constructions and older builds. While in historic districts Slatersville and Forestdale, houses are closer together, giving a more suburban feel with its expansive sidewalks, attached garages and occasional condos. Single-family homes in North Smithfield run from $350,000 to $900,000, depending on the size of the lots and square footage of the houses.

Parks with playgrounds, ponds and lakes
North Smithfield is recreationally diverse; residents enjoy smaller strip parks and sports complexes in the historic districts. Pacheco Park features a baseball diamond, basketball court and playground for kids. Carroll Park, the smaller neighborhood park, contains benches and a field to toss a football or walk dogs through. The Slatersville Reservoir is a 144-acre lake with two dams. The reservoir is also where John and Samuel Slater built the textile mill their eponymous village was originally formed around in 1807. More to the south, Audubon Fort Wildlife Refuge is a preserve featuring simple, low-incline walking trails and three ponds. Residents walking through this park can spot white-tailed deer, foxes and owls among its coniferous trees.

Walkable shopping centers and homemade ice cream
Within North Smithfield is mainly locally owned retail and grocers, but across Rhode Island state Route 146 in Woonsocket is a significant commercial district, complete with an Aldi, Walmart, and Kohl's. Residents can browse Goodwin Bros Farm Stand for local, seasonal produce within the town. Marilyn Bennett, broker and owner of Salzberg Real Estate, says, “Slatersville village is insulated with amenities; it’s one of the few places in North Smithfield with its own shopping center that you can walk to. The rest of the town isn’t as walkable as Slatersville.” Slatersville Plaza features Brigido's Market, a deli with fresh meat and produce available. Wright's Dairy Farm and Bakery serves everything from homemade ice cream to pastries, bread and pizzas. They've operated continuously as a dairy farm since 1914. Lindy's Tavern is a local bar and grill serving seafood, burgers and draft beers while hosting open mic nights and live music regularly.

A high school helping students reach career goals
The town is served by the North Smithfield School Department, consisting of North Smithfield Elementary and North Smithfield High, both rated a B-plus on Niche, and North Smithfield Middle rated an A-minus. North Smithfield High, the only public high school in the town, has a teacher-student ratio of 12-to-1 and features an Academic Pathways program to help juniors and seniors progress toward their careers before graduation. Academic Pathways covers students who want to work or study computer science, manufacturing, law and communications.

Play a game of soccer, basketball or flag football
The Wide World of Indoor Sports complex allows residents to stay active and play soccer, basketball and flag football on rainy days. They host summer camps and league games for all ages, from kids to adults. There's also a full bar, concessions stand and mezzanine overlooking the fields for people to watch the games.
Halfway between Worcester and Providence
North Smithfield's walkability is only somewhat consistent, considering most sidewalk infrastructure is in the historic districts, so a car is recommended for travel to nearby retail and other amenities. Bennett says, “Many people move to North Smithfield to commute to Worcester or Providence because it's halfway between both cities, a bit more than twenty minutes’ drive to either.” Rhode Island state Route 146 and Interstate 295 are close to the town. With a diverse mix of developments, combining rural land, historic suburbs and ample green spaces, North Smithfield is a constantly evolving community.
