In the 1600s, North Valley was full of Pueblo communities with stone and mud buildings and ancestral lands. Towards the end of the century, Spanish settlers occupied present-day Albuquerque, blending their traditions and cultures with Puebloans. Today, the area offers large homes with vast lots of land for farms or gardens. “There are lots of million-dollar houses but also lots of little farmers who have been there for four generations,” says James DeMay, an Associate Broker with Coldwell Banker Legacy, who was born and raised in the Albuquerque area. North Valley is a small rural city with about 11,000 people in the heart of New Mexico. It’s situated next to the Rio Grande and 7 miles from downtown Albuquerque, the state’s largest city. “It’s our most southwestern area with ranch-style and adobe homes, farmers markets and livestock,” DeMay says.

Albuquerque is known as the "Hot Air Balloon Capital of the World." The Balloon Fiesta Park sits in North Valley’s northeast corner and is known for hosting the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta each October. The nine-day event celebrates hot air balloons in all shapes and sizes with live entertainment and a mass ascension. Next to the park is the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum, and people visit North Valley Bike Park for its man-made dirt path. The Rio Grande stretches over 1,000 miles and is a major spot for fishing, boating and whitewater rafting.

Need to know: Commutes, crime and climate
New Mexico State Road 47 runs north and south, while New Mexico State Road 423 is an east-west freeway. The highways intersect in the northern part of the city. The Montaño Rail Runner Station has two central train stops on El Pueblo Road and Montano Road. The Albuquerque International Sunport is 13 miles away.
