Right across Codorus Creek from downtown York and bordered by Route 30 and Interstate 83, North York is a convenient neighborhood to live in, no matter where residents are headed. Townhouses line the streets of North York in uniform rows, and the area is primarily residential in makeup, aside from the 100-acre lot comprising Prospect Hill Cemetery. Bisecting the neighborhood is George Street, a major thoroughfare that runs straight through York, connecting residents to amenities and employers downtown and beyond. “I would recommend it to anyone looking to have an easy commute,” says Randell Jackson, a local Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services and a York-area resident. “North York is ideal for that.” Add in highly rated Central York Schools, and this neighborhood becomes an attractive option for those who want to be just outside the city while staying as close as possible to downtown.

Urban row homes are packed onto gridded streets
The narrow, gridded streets of North York are lined by row homes with cars parked on the street out front. Some have a grassy strip bordering the sidewalk and modest backyards, and the rare tree decorates corner lots between telephone poles. Most townhouses were built in the early 1900s, and some feature decorative Victorian elements like bay windows and turrets, while others have plainer, Colonial-inspired flat façades with black shutters. Others still are American Foursquare-style duplexes with dormer windows and broad front porches. These homes can be priced below $100,000 for a fixer-upper, though the median for the neighborhood is $165,000. The occasional single-family home can also be found in more suburban areas, ranging from early 20th-century bungalows to ranch-style and split-level builds from the 1980s and ‘90s, priced around $350,000 for four bedrooms.
Historic row homes in North York date back to the early 1900's.

Above average education at four Central York Schools
North York is zoned to Central York Schools, which is a major draw for the neighborhood as the district is much higher rated than the neighboring York City School District. “I think it's a great school system. It provides a high-quality academic experience,” says Jackson, whose children are enrolled there. Hayshire Elementary serves young students through the third grade before sending them to North Hills Elementary through the sixth grade. Both schools score a B-minus from Niche. Central York Middle, which houses grades seven and eight, earns a B-plus. Students round out their education at Central York High, which receives an A-minus with high marks for its diverse array of over 50 extracurriculars.

Two major highways connect residents to southeastern Pennsylvania
Route 30 and Interstate 83 meet at the northeastern edge of the neighborhood, making North York a bustling hub for car travel. Even George Street sees its fair share of traffic, connecting residents to downtown York in less than 10 minutes, with RabbitTransit bus stops along the way. Those who keep heading south will eventually hit WellSpan York Hospital, roughly two to three miles away. Residents are also approximately 35 minutes from Harrisburg International Airport via I-83.
Everyday needs close by along George Street and Route 30
Made up almost exclusively of residential and industrial spaces, most folks head outside of the neighborhood for shopping and dining since some of the best options in York are just a stone’s throw away across Codorus Creek downtown. However, there are a handful of convenient spots on George Street. Residents can stop by Grocery Outlet for their everyday needs or head west on Route 30 to Manchester Crossroads and Northwest Plaza, where more big-box stores can be found. For a bite to eat close to home, locals head to District Thai Restaurant for a taste of Bangkok or stop in at Caribbean Choice for a heaping tray of Jamaican jerk chicken.

Fresh air and green space at North York Borough Park
Residents can enjoy the fresh air at North York Borough Park, where kids can let loose on the playground and friends can hit the basketball courts for a pickup game. Those who prefer America’s favorite pastime can cross over Codorus Creek to catch a York Revolution minor-league baseball game at WellSpan Park, which also has batting cages available for rent.

Peaceful Prospect Hill Cemetery lends North York an air of quiet
Much of North York comprises Prospect Hill Cemetery, which was established in 1849 and spans more than 100 acres. More than just a respectful resting place for the dead, the Victorian rural cemetery movement intended to create attractive green spaces for people living just outside industrial city centers, reflected in the beautifully landscaped burial grounds.
