Acres of forests, swimming spots and proximity to Tilton’s Main Street

Located just 17 miles north of Concord with direct access to Interstate 93, Northfield is more than a pass-through neighborhood. With hundreds of acres of New Hampshire forests, swimming holes and parks, this town is a great area for those who enjoy nature. It also neighbors Tilton, which has several small-town and family-owned businesses and restaurants. "We're trying to grow our businesses, but right now we're more of a recreational neighborhood," says Stephanie Giovannucci, Northfield town administrator, member of the Parks Commission and treasurer for the local library. She is also on the Northfield Economic Development Commission, which aims to bring in new businesses and help current businesses expand. Northfield homes often include cozy bungalows or ranch-style residences, as well as a scattered amount of newly constructed traditional family homes. Though housing is scattered over several miles, the neighborhood is full of the sounds of nature. "We have ponds and rivers, and we're currently in the process of updating and revitalizing our town-owned parks, and a new campground is moving in," Giovannucci says.

Swimming, mountain biking and revitalized public parks

Park revitalization efforts have improved Pines Park, and they are building a gazebo there for community events. “We’re also hoping to turn the Tilton Northfield Rotary Arena into more than just a place for horse-pulls. We’re talking about adding car shows and dog shows, and we even just finished building a concession stand and an announcing booth. We also try to get a small ice-skating rink in there during the winter.” Locals can explore the New Hampshire wilderness on nearby trails, like the Winnipesaukee River Trail that goes from Tilton and Northfield into Franklin. “The Foothills Foundation, which was formed out of the recreational team from NEDC, is trying to connect all the trail systems in the area and hopefully someday throughout NH so you can ride all day,” Giovannucci says. Sandogardy Pond is a swimming lake with a playground and grassy areas to sit and enjoy the afternoon. The Highland Mountain Bike Park draws thousands of visitors from all over the world. Like a ski slope, bikers ride up a ski lift to the top of the mountain and ride down again on their bikes, choosing from one of a few different courses with varying difficulties. There is also a slope for beginners.

New constructions and classic New England residences

Homeowners in Northfield can enjoy the peace and quiet of rural living without sacrificing the convenience of getting around. “Our location is great. We could be in the mountains in a couple of hours, or at the ocean in a couple of hours,” Giovannucci says. New England farmhouses from the 1800s and newer homes on large amounts of acreage attract hobby farmers and landowners to the area. Colonial revivals lend a classic charm, while new constructions from the 2000s in modern traditional styles are cropping up west of Tilton near Cross Mill Road. Homes closer to Tilton may consist of rustic bungalows or manufactured dwellings from the 1950s through the 1990s. Most single-family homes range in price between $200,000 and $600,000. Residences on farmland, equestrian land or those that have large amounts of acreage can reach up to $800,000.
