Suburban community north of the Black Warrior River
Located on the north side of the Black Warrior River, Northport has grown relatively quickly over the last two decades, from just over 21,000 in 2005 to roughly 31,000 today. While much of that growth is spillover from Tuscaloosa, located right across the river, people often choose to live in Northport for a quieter, slower lifestyle than the college town. “I think one of the biggest attractions is the safety of our community,” says Glenda Webb, city administrator for the City of Northport. “It’s a neighborhood-friendly community, and very neighborly.” With a quaint main street just across the bridge from downtown Tuscaloosa, Northport offers quick commutes to employers like the University of Alabama in a more comfortable suburban setting.

City investments in parks and recreation
While Northport has been making investments in city parks and recreation, the biggest is still yet to come. In 2024, the city announced the controversial University Beach project, a 77-acre mixed-use public-private partnership built around a lagoon and beach. While the project was originally pitched as a family waterpark, the scope expanded to include hotels, “beachfront” homes, a concert venue and watersports like kayaking and paddleboarding. A vocal group of Northport residents have come out against the project due to the city’s lack of transparency and the millions of dollars in city funds appropriated for development. Phase one of University Beach is currently scheduled for a 2026 opening. River Run Park is also in development and will add 9 baseball fields to the 6 already at Kentuck Park. It is expected to attract youth sports tournaments to the area. Meanwhile, residents can enjoy the Northport Riverwalk along the Black Warrior River and play pickleball at the courts located at the western end of the trail.

Quaint downtown Northport
Downtown Northport is built around the intersection of 5th Street and Main Avenue, offering a quieter atmosphere than downtown Tuscaloosa right across the river. The Kentuck Art Center, with studios and a gallery shop, helps shape the area’s artsy character, while local hardware stores, antique shops and restaurants like Billy’s Sports Grill sit across the street. Further north, shopping centers and strip malls line McFarland Boulevard, where residents can find grocery stores and chain restaurants.

Festivals hosted by downtown Northport
Since 1972, the Kentuck Festival of the Arts has been a mainstay in Northport, drawing residents and visitors alike to Kentuck Park. But in 2024, the festival is moving across the river to Tuscaloosa. Northport now hosts the West Alabama Food and Wine Festival each spring, offering samples from local chefs as well as music and entertainment. “We’re trying to provide family-friendly things that people can access at low cost or no cost so everyone can be involved,” Webb says. On fall Saturdays, college football takes over the Tuscaloosa area. The Alabama Crimson Tide draws over 100,000 fans to Bryant-Denny Stadium, a little over 2 miles from Northport. While gameday traffic shuts down much of Tuscaloosa, Northport is less affected.

Access to Interstate 20 in Tuscaloosa
Lurleen Wallace Boulevard runs north-south through the center of Northport, while McFarland Boulevard cuts east-west. Both lead to bridges across the Black Warrior River and, eventually, to Interstate 20, the main route through West Alabama. Birmingham is about 60 miles east down I-20, where Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport offers flights to 20 destinations across the country. For emergency and specialized medical care, the Northport Medical Center is located near the intersection of Lurleen Wallace Boulevard and McFarland Boulevard.
Important to know
Northport considers itself a safe place to live, using that as a draw for potential residents. “One of the main attractions in Northport is the public safety — knowing you can rest easy at night and have neighborhood services that are close to you,” Webb says. In 2023, the most recent year that FBI data was available, Northport averaged 153.8 violent crimes per 100,000 people over the course of the year, compared to a national average of 115.4. Property crimes were lower, however, averaging 129.3 offenses per 100,000 over the course of a year compared to the 179.6 national average. Like the rest of the Deep South, Northport experiences hot, humid summers and mild winters. Severe storms are common, especially over the summer, and tropical systems can occasionally bring heavy rainfall and high winds.
