Pristine setting in the Adirondacks

Surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains, the setting in Edinburg is certainly pristine. The Great Sacandaga Lake carves through the center of town as well, and the two sides are joined by the Batchellerville Bridge. But there’s more than natural beauty to this neighborhood of 2,000 residents, where tourism plays a large role in the local economy. This is an area rich with American history, as evidenced by the Nellie Tyrell Museum and Rural Museum: visitors can explore this former schoolhouse and barn to learn about Edinburg’s logging heritage. The Copeland Bridge nearby is the only covered bridge left in the county, built in 1879 when Edinburg’s economy depended on transporting livestock.

Homes surrounded by woodlands

Prewar two-bedroom cottages can go for $165,000 and feature natural timber siding that expresses a rustic charm. But yards can be nearly half an acre, and neighbors may not be visible through the wooded lots, meaning that homebuyers should be comfortable with having a sense of privacy and seclusion. There are other lifestyles available here, especially when peeking into the higher price ranges, beginning in the mid $300,000s. For example, a midcentury multi-level home can be found situated next to homes of a similar genre, creating a sense of tightknit community. Yards will feature small decorative plantings, and there’s walkability on the streets set back from thoroughfares like Shore Road.

Sacandaga Lake is great for boating and picnics

Situated in the thick of Adirondack Park, there’s no shortage of outdoor amenities that Edinburg residents have access to, particularly if camping is desired – both the Northampton Beach Campground and the Birch Haven Campground are available for residents on the east and west side of the lake, respectively. But perhaps the most popular, and the most convenient, spot to reach on any given day, is the Sacandaga Lake Picnic Place. Use the boat launch to get out on the water, or take root at a picnic table under the shade of tall pines.

Humble hometown cooking

Four Corners Diner is a humble establishment where breakfast is served all day on a marble countertop, along with other comfort food items like chicken quesadillas. Old Trail Inn is another spot for American cuisine, situated in an old red farmhouse. Locals come for the pizza in a setting that feels like a cozy sports bar. For groceries and other conveniences, residents drive five minutes west to downtown Northville. Tops offers the traditional supermarket experience, while J.F. Farm Store & Café feels like a throwback to yesteryear, with vegetables stacked on a table and sacks of flour shelved on the wall.

All-weather transportation is necessary

Route 4, also known as Shore Road, is the place to go when in search of dining options. Roads near the waterfront, especially on the east side, can concentrate into gridded residential developments that give a structured sense of place. Overall, this is a car-centric community with few main thoroughfares. Most destinations are not clustered together, but scattered across several miles.
