A mill community turned artist haven in Norwalk
Originally settled by people searching for fabled silver mines in the 17th century, the Silvermine suburb of Norwalk grew throughout the next century as mills were built along its namesake river. By the early 1900s, muralists, romance writers and other artists resided here, using the Silvermine River’s small rapids and lush greenery as inspiration. “I know a few painters and writers who still live here, so it’s known across Norwalk as an artsy and semi-rural neighborhood to this day,” says Sara Littlefield, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who has sold several homes in the area. A former grist mill, cotton factory and Colonial Revival mansion on Perry Avenue have now been combined into a renovated tavern and inn called GrayBarns. The Silvermine Arts Center was established by sculptor Solon Borglum in 1922 and continues to operate as a school and gallery. American quarter horses gallop around dirt terrain at Silvermine Farm, an equestrian training facility on Comstock Hill Avenue. A red barn-style pro shop sits in front of Silvermine Golf Club’s 27-hole course, spanning 100 acres off Seir Hill Road. Residents can easily access state Route 15, locally known as Merritt Parkway, on the neighborhood’s southern edge, and the Merritt 7 station is only 2 miles east.
Silvermine has homes from the 19th century and the last decade
“The diverse housing stock in Silvermine is a huge draw,” Littlefield says. “The century-old houses have all been renovated, and a bunch of new construction is happening right now. I’ll get 10 to 12 offers on any listing here.” The neighborhood’s earliest houses are from the mid-1800s. Moss-covered stone walls surround four-bedroom Colonial Revivals, and all-wood farmhouses frequently have detached barns converted into garages. Asphalt cul-de-sacs are lined with 1960s ranch-style homes, often shaded by red pine and black oak trees. Half-circle driveways stretch in front of early 2000s New Traditional homes near the Silvermine Golf Course. Private swimming pools sit behind white modern farmhouses built within the last decade on 1-acre lots. Buying in the neighborhood typically costs between $700,000 and $2 million, a range higher than a Norwalk home’s average $650,000 selling price. Heavy rain frequently causes the Silvermine River to overflow, putting homes near it at a greater risk of flooding.

An 1899 stone bridge crosses the Silvermine River, marking the entrance to GrayBarns, a boutique inn and tavern. Gravel paths connect inn portion to the Mercantile at GrayBarns, a coffee shop and cocktail lounge selling a few artisan groceries. Restored wood beams and a crackling stone hearth fill the Tavern at GrayBarns, where patrons can also enjoy seafood and steak on the patio overlooking the Mill Pond waterfall. “People across Fairfield County come to GrayBarns for weddings and weekend trips, but it’s just as popular for locals to come for a date night or special occasion,” Littlefield says. Merritt Parkway offers a quick commute to New York City
Most of the area doesn’t have sidewalks, making it a car-dependent community. A 52-mile drive southwest leads to New York City, and 35 miles northeast lands drivers in New Haven. On Glover Avenue, Merritt 7 station is a stop for commuter rail on the Metro-North New Haven Line. The trip to Grand Central Terminal takes about an hour and a half. Glover Avenue also has the closest Norwalk Transit Wheels bus stops. The Norwalk Hospital is less than 4 miles south of Silvermine, and the Westchester Country Airport is about 20 miles west.
