Silvermine has homes from the 19th century and the last decade
“The diverse housing stock in Silvermine is a huge draw,” Littlefield says. “The century-old houses have all been renovated, and a bunch of new construction is happening right now. I’ll get 10 to 12 offers on any listing here.” The neighborhood’s earliest houses are from the mid-1800s. Moss-covered stone walls surround four-bedroom Colonial Revivals, and all-wood farmhouses frequently have detached barns converted into garages. Asphalt cul-de-sacs are lined with 1960s ranch styles, often shaded by red pine and black oak trees. Half-circle driveways stretch in front of early 2000s New Traditional homes near the Silvermine Golf Course. Private swimming pools sit behind white modern farmhouses built within the last decade on 1-acre lots. Buying in the neighborhood typically costs between $700,000 and $2 million, a range higher than a Norwalk home’s average $650,000 selling price. Heavy rain frequently causes the Silvermine River to overflow, putting homes near it at a greater risk of flooding.

Golfers, equestrians and hikers can find activity in Silvermine
Pin oak trees and water hazards line Silvermine Golf Club, featuring a 9-hole executive course and an 18-hole option. Red umbrellas shade black iron tables outside The Grille, an on-course neo-classical-style restaurant that opened in 2024. The club is invitation-only, with single memberships starting at $8,000 and family plans reaching $10,000. Red clapboard stables and wooden jumping obstacles fill Silvermine Farm, where equestrians board and train their horses for competition. Locals can hike a mile-long trail traversing marshland and eastern purple coneflower meadows at the Silvermine-Fowler Preserve on Silvermine Road. Though the Silvermine River is too shallow and rocky for kayaking, the nearest Long Island Sound beach is Calf Pasture Beach, less than 9 miles south.

Silvermine Elementary School has a magnet program
Children can attend Silvermine Dual Language Magnet Elementary School, graded a C-plus by Niche. Each grade spends one-half of the day speaking English and the other half speaking Spanish. Students may continue to West Rocks Middle School, earning a B-minus, and Norwalk High School, which gets a B-plus.

Classes and galleries at the Silvermine Arts Center
Silvermine Arts Center is located in an early 20th-century gray barn on Silvermine Road. The two-year art school offers over 1,000 courses, like printmaking, metalworking and ceramics. All five galleries are free to enter, allowing visitors to see rotating impressionist paintings, metal sculptures and woven textile pieces. Every Christmas Eve, Santa Claus drives around Silvermine in a vintage fire truck, ending his journey at the arts center parking lot where elves hand out candy canes and kids drink hot cocoa.

Merritt Parkway offers a quick commute to New York City
Most of the area doesn’t have sidewalks, making it a car-dependent community. A 50-mile drive south on Merritt Parkway leads to New York City, and 40 miles north lands drivers in New Haven. On Glover Avenue, Merritt 7 Train Station follows the Metro-North Railroad, taking passengers to Grand Central Terminal in about an hour and a half. Glover Avenue also has the closest Norwalk Transit bus stops. An 1899 stone bridge crosses the Silvermine River, marking the entrance to GrayBarn’s 49-acre property. Gravel paths connect the 11-room inn to The Mercantile, a coffee shop and cocktail lounge selling a few artisan groceries. Restored wood beams and a crackling stone hearth fill The Tavern, where patrons can also enjoy seafood and steak on the patio overlooking the Mill Pond waterfall. “People across Fairfield County come to GrayBarns for weddings and weekend trips, but it’s just as popular for locals to come for a date night or special occasion,” Littlefield says. Groceries can be found at Stop & Shop, 2 miles south, or Walmart Supercenter, equidistant to the east. Wine bars and sushi spots are in Italianate-style storefronts in South Norwalk’s historic downtown, 6 miles from Silvermine.
