About Norwalk, OH

About Norwalk, OH

Norwalk offers a mix of settings in a convenient location

Norwalk packs a lot into a relatively small area, from the tall, brick Italianate buildings that house businesses at the center of the community to the single-family homes on the outskirts lining leafy, suburban streets. This locale features a broad mix of homes, local restaurants and outdoor recreation options just about 60 miles west of Cleveland. Still, Norwalk offers life at a slower pace than the big city. “I believe it’s a family community,” says Realtor David Wallace of Re/Max Quality Realty, who was born and raised in Norwalk. “Kind of like a bedroom community.”

Classic to modern, housing choices abound

Quite a bit of Norwalk’s housing stock dates to the 1800s. Colonial and Foursquare styles are among the area’s oldest houses, and some have been well-maintained and updated over time. “It’s a little bit of a mix,” Wallace says. “I’d say it’s about 75-25, with 25% being updated or renovated.” Norwalk’s 19th-century houses sell for $40,000 to $325,000, based on the condition and square footage. Recently built, new traditional style homes are limited but are available in spots, including the Whitefield subdivision on Norwalk's east side. “It’s filling up, there’s only a handful of lots left back in there,” Wallace says. The newer options in Norwalk go for $400,000 to $600,000. Homes built across the 20th century, including the area’s variety of midcentury ranch styles, generally sell for $50,000 to $500,000.

Norwalk’s core is an eclectic commercial hub

Norwalk’s downtown unfolds along Main Street in the middle of the community. Downtown is a walkable district with glass storefronts and a series of classic brick buildings. They hold businesses like Berry’s on Main, a restaurant that has been open since 1944 and is hard to miss at night with its signature neon sign. Glass Bar is a popular place to grab a drink and play pool and darts. Red Shamrock, just off Main Street, is known for its Reuben sandwiches. Other businesses in the area include Collector’s Hangout, which specializes in trading cards and comics, and Belleza Boutique, a women’s clothing store. Milan Avenue intersects with Main Street and features Walmart Supercenter and Schild's IGA Marketplace, a Norwalk-based grocery store.

County fair, strawberries and racing are Norwalk traditions

Norwalk is the seat of Huron County and home to the Huron County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds host the Huron County Fair each August, with rides, a tractor pull, a rodeo and more. “The Huron County Fair draws a lot of people for the week,” Wallace says. The Norwalk Jaycees group organizes an annual Strawberry Festival, that’s held along Main Street each May and includes a beauty pageant and the Strawberry Jam 5K. Norwalk is also home to the Summit Motorsports Park, which dates to the 1960s. The park hosts multiple events each month, including the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in late June, part of drag racing’s top circuit. “The racetrack’s definitely a gem of our city,” Wallace says. “It’s one of the best racetracks in the United States.”

Norwalk schools put an early emphasis on STEM instruction

The Norwalk City School District maintains a B rating on Niche. The district serves about 2,600 students across three elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school and one high school. Students can begin learning about technology at the elementary school level, in second grade, through resources like Lego and STEM labs. The B-minus-rated Norwalk High has its own performing arts center with an auditorium and an art gallery that doubles as a banquet room.

Ernsthausen is a magnet for recreation

Norwalk has what Wallace describes as a wonderful community center. The Ernsthausen Recreation Center includes indoor and outdoor pools, a gymnasium and exercise rooms. Access is available for a fee, and locals can work out on their own or take one of the center’s fitness classes. The center hosts a variety of youth and adult sports leagues as well. Bishman Park is adjacent to the recreation center and includes a playground. Norwalk’s McGuan Park features an all-abilities playground and the nation’s first wheelchair-accessible BMX track.

Bigger cities like Cleveland and Toledo are relatively close

Part of U.S. Route 20 cuts through Norwalk, and Interstate 90 is just north of the community. Both are ways for drivers in town to reach Cleveland and Toledo. Cleveland is just over 60 miles east, and Toledo is just over 70 miles west. The Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is about 45 miles away. The 99-bed Fisher-Titus Medical Center is in Norwalk, just off Route 20.
