Spacious, safe and family-oriented neighborhood less than 30 miles from New York City

Norwood is a suburban borough in Bergen County, New Jersey just a few miles south of the border with New York. The neighborhood offers residents a slower pace of life with an almost small-town feel. The neighborhood is centered on its family-oriented. From the large lots, spacious parks, and well-regarded school system, it has everything to attract families. “Norwood is the greatest place to raise children,” Jill Saunders, a Realtor with Sotheby’s International Realty and a longtime resident says. “There are a lot of beautiful tree areas. You feel like you’re further from the city but you’re not.”

From colonials and ranches to spacious new-traditional homes

Most homes in Norwood often have spacious front and back yards with plenty of room for kids or pets to play. Colonials, ranch-style and split-level homes are the most common housing styles for homes at the lower end of the price range in Norwood. These homes sell for between $500,000 and $1.1 million. New traditional homes have become more prevalent in the neighborhood and typically cost between $950,000 and $3.3 million. While the neighborhood does have sidewalks, they don’t line all streets. Residents can expect to be more car-dependent in this community, and the Walk Score of 17 out of 100 backs that up. According to the CAP Index, Norwood is considered a safe community, which gave Norwood a Crime Score of 2 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average.

Perfect fields and scenic trails

“The fields are perfect,” Saunders says. “The football and baseball fields, the dog parks, the gorgeous lake. Everything they do here is about families.” Parents often take kids to play at Kennedy Field, which has a basketball court and sports fields where local teams usually practice and compete. Little League games typically take place at the baseball field at Ruckman Park. Children may enjoy Pondside Park, where they can play on the playground or feed the ducks on the pond. Residents looking to get a hike in while exploring the nature of North Jersey can head to Rockleigh Woods Sanctuary, which has a 2.4-mile trail that goes around the preserve.

From trivia at Gerry’s Place to fine Italian dining at Dimora

Most residents drive about a mile into Northvale for groceries, but the neighborhood has several dining options. Livingston Street has a stretch of restaurants that provide diverse options for the suburbs, from pizza to sushi. Gerry’s Place is a trendy bar and grill among locals thanks to its relaxing atmosphere and friendly bartenders, Wednesday trivia nights and live bands on the weekends. Dimora Ristorante & Bar is another popular option for residents, offering the community fine Italian dining. “Dimora is not cheap, but the food is excellent. It’s a family-orientated restaurant,” Saunders says. Residents looking to satisfy a sweet tooth can also treat themselves to a unique, delicious mochi-filled donut or boba tea at Mochinut. For shopping, locals head to Closter Plaza, just south of the neighborhood, which offers stores such as Target, Whole Foods and HomeGoods.
