Norwood is a Philadelphia suburb with a close-knit community
Norwood is one of a cluster of communities not far from Philadelphia’s bustling streets where people come to get away from all the city’s excitement yet remain close to the city, its amenities and certain aspects of its lifestyle. Over the decades, families of one-time Philadelphians have steadily streamed southward into Delaware County. And each new wave of transplants pushes more people into places like Norwood, a close-knit suburb about 16 miles from the city. “The people who buy in Norwood are moving from the suburbs closer to Philadelphia,” says Dave Coffey, a Realtor with Keller Williams Mainline. “People know each other here. It’s a tight-knit community.”

Ranch-style houses, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals are common
A walk or ride around town reveals a densely populated suburb that moves at a distinctly more relaxed pace than its substantially more heavily populated cousin to the north. Norwood’s nearly 6,000 residents inhabit a mix of mostly single-family homes dating back some 50 to 60 years. You’ll find Colonial Revivals, ranch-style homes and some Cape Cods too among the rows of neat and well-maintained homes. “There’s a little something for everyone,” Coffey says.
Norwood’s median single family price is around $310,000, with homes often selling from $240,000 to $500,000. Homebuyers in search of a single family home should prepare to shell out around $300,000 or so, Coffey advises. And with fewer row homes and more single-family inventory, investment sales aren’t as active here as in some neighboring communities, which explains the steeper ratio of homeowners to renters. These rowhomes usually cost $140,000 to $350,000.

High school athletes and other residents play at Norwood Lower Park
The high school’s student-athletes play for the Bucks. However, prior to that, they would have been Termites, the name belonging to Norwood Athletic Association teams. The association plays its home games at George A. Cassidy Field, which is located at Norwood Lower Park, the community’s main broad green space. Besides baseball diamonds, the park also has fields for soccer, basketball courts and vast spaces to relax or walk the family dog. Perhaps indoor activities are more to your liking. If so, The Skatium in nearby Havertown is the rink people around here flock to for hours of ice-skating fun.

The Erin Pub is a community staple near other restaurants
For a nice meal away from home, chances are you’ll have to head just a short drive into neighboring communities. There is one popular spot, however, that’s a local favorite and brings neighboring townspeople here. The Erin Pub is a mainstay of Irish cooking and is beloved for its thick prime rib.
