Sherrard schools prepare students for careers

Students in Oak Grove might attend Sherrard Elementary School, Matherville Intermediate School, Sherrard Junior High School and Sherrard High School. Matherville Intermediate School is rated a B-minus by Niche, the high school gets a B rating, and the elementary and junior high schools are each rated a B-plus. Sherrard High School serves approximately 430 students with a student-teacher ratio of 12-to-1. Students can enroll in the tech prep program, which allows the school to offer nine degrees through a partnership with Black Hawk Community College. Vocational courses at the high school include family and consumer sciences and agriculture. Sherrard High has won three state championships in chess and one in girls’ track and field.

Commuting to work on Highway 67

Highway 67 runs north to south through the middle of Oak Grove, giving residents a route north to the Quad Cities. Milan is about 2.5 miles north, while Rock Island and Davenport are about 8 miles north. Quad Cities International Airport is just 6 miles from Oak Grove along Highway 67 and Rock Island-Milan Parkway. Residents are also just 4.5 miles from the John Deere Parts Distribution Center in Milan and 13 miles from the John Deere Harvester Works plant in East Moline.

Tee off at Pinnacle Country Club

Residents can head to Camden Park for some outdoor recreation. This 90-acre park is the largest in the city of Milan and has facilities for a variety of activities. The park has three softball fields, multiple playgrounds and two disc golf courses. Several picnic shelters throughout the park can be reserved for private events. The Lodge is a heated indoor building that can accommodate 30 people for private events. Residents can join the Pinnacle Country Club and enjoy a challenging, scenic course. The par-72 course features tree-lined fairways and rolling hills throughout all 18 holes. Members can stop in Packer Lounge after their game for cold drinks and classic bar food like burgers and pizza. Multiple membership options are available at the club.
