A historic planned community in the Tualatin Valley
One of the first master-planned communities in Oregon and on the National Register of Historic Places, Oak Hills is a suburban city just west of Portland. Its architecture is inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright — access to nature is emphasized by floor-to-ceiling windows, and moss-covered pine trees and community pools await. Walking paths wind between cul-de-sacs, converging at an indoor-outdoor recreation complex maintained by the Oak Hills HOA. “It’s one of the first neighborhoods to have so much green space — about 33 acres. Having that much play area is a natural draw for kids," says resident Ron Crutcher, who is a Realtor with John L. Scott. "It’s a wonderful place for people to grow up. Many who grew up here have moved back to raise their families."

Oak Hills Recreation Center activities and a walking trail system
The Oak Hills Recreation Center is the community’s crown jewel, where athletes and hobbyists gather in the heart of the city. It includes a playground, a baseball diamond, soccer fields and tennis courts. The facility was recently renovated, giving the 1960s complex a more modern feel. “We all had to put more money in because the pool was 50 years old and needed to be replaced, and we contributed more money to embellish the building and new gym. That made it so much better,” says Nancy Neuman, resident for over 15 years. The outdoor pool hosts a swim team and swimming lessons, while the clubhouse offers indoor pastimes like quilting and dancing. Walking trails run throughout the community, leading to this main recreation area as well as smaller pocket parks equipped with playgrounds and swingsets.

Midcentury modern and contemporary architecture in Oak Hills
As a master-planned suburb, Oak Hills is made up of thoughtfully laid out subdivisions and cul-de-sacs of single-family homes. Yards are spacious, often landscaped with rose bushes and hedges. Most of the architecture is midcentury modern, with 29 homes designed by the well-known architect Robert Rummer, who defined Pacific Northwest Modernism. “The HOA wants to preserve the integrity of the original architecture — to make changes, residents have to go through the Architectural Review Board to make sure they comply with the flavor Oak Hills exudes,” Crutcher says. In the town’s north side, there are some contemporary homes from the 1990s. The median sales price in the area is about $700,000, and the market remains steady. “Oak Hills has a special draw, and as such, houses don’t last compared to other neighboring areas," says Crutcher. "I’ve sold over 197 homes here, many more than once, and raised my family here as well."

Served by the well-rated Beaverton School District
Beaverton School District has an A-minus rating on Niche. Serving approximately 39,000 students, the district has a student-teacher ratio of 18-to-1. Oak Hills Elementary School is a significant factor in attracting families to the area. “Having a centrally located school is a big plus. It was designed so children didn’t have to walk to any streets to get to school and can walk using green spaces,” Crutcher says.

Community Events: the Turkey Trot and the Fourth of July Celebration
The annual Turkey Trot in November is one of the community’s most popular events. It includes a 5k race and donations funding a scholarship for students in the Beaverton School District. The Fourth of July Celebration is Oak Hill’s most beloved tradition, passed on for over 30 years and run by volunteers. It has live music, food trucks and much more. “They have a kiddie parade and a hometown parade through the community. The fire trucks and police come. They make a big deal out of it for families,” Neuman says. The grand finale is a fireworks show, attended by around 8,000 people every year.
Shopping and restaurants in Oak Hills Village
The city’s only shopping center is the Oak Hills Village strip mall, located on the southern edge of town. It has a car wash, a convenience store and a few restaurants. One of the most popular is McMenamins, an iconic Portland chain that changed the drinking laws in Oregon, allowing eateries to sell beer brewed on-site. There’s also a casual pizza chain and Vanakkam PDX, a locally owned Indian restaurant. The closest grocery store is Walmart Neighborhood Market, less than a mile south of Oak Hills. There is also a Fred Meyer and a Safeway within a short drive.
