Spacious homes near major North Carolina cities
Since its incorporation in 1998, Oak Ridge has steadily grown as a close-knit residential community anchored by the Oak Ridge Military Academy. Although located near urban centers of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point, together referred to as the Triad, the town maintains its small-town feel through community activities like its holiday Light Up the Night celebration. “There are incredible local restaurants, and houses tend to have a lot of acreage,” says Shaunna Overman, local broker and owner of the Overman Real Estate Group since 2016. “It feels almost rural.” Located southeast of Oak Ridge, the Piedmont Triad International Airport provides convenience for locals who travel frequently, although planes can be heard passing overhead.
Newly built and historical homes on large lots
Homes in Oak Ridge are a mixture of new construction and renovated historical properties. Midcentury National-style homes with two bedrooms and covered porches can sell for less than $200,000, while four-bedroom ‘90s-era Colonial Revival-style homes with brick exteriors and large grassy lawns can sell for $450,000. Recently built New Traditional-style homes with steeply gabled roofs and stone facades sit on large lots with attached two-car garages and can sell for more than $600,000. New Traditional houses with more ornate details, such as rooftop spires or turret rooms, sit on large, multi-acre lots with winding driveways and stone-paved backyard patios, selling for between $800,000 and over $1 million.

Abundant after-school activities in Guilford County
Local kids may attend Oak Ridge Elementary School or Northwest Guilford Middle, both rated A-minus by Niche. Northwest Guilford Middle offers a range of afterschool activities for students, including robotics, chess and gaming clubs, plus weekly Ketchup Club meetings where kids can “catch up” on work they missed or need help with. Students at the A-rated Northwest Guilford High can easily start their own clubs anytime during the year. Some of the more unique club topics include the Stray Cat Club, which works with local organizations to learn how to care for community cat colonies; Crochet 4 the Cure, where members learn to crochet while fundraising for cancer-related charities; and the Butterfly Garden Club, which is working to transform one of the school’s courtyards with a focus on monarch butterfly conservation.

Local delis and small boutiques
A small shopping plaza in the town center has several small, locally-owned boutiques and restaurants. Bistro 150 is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving coffee and quick meals with a friendly vibe. “It’s the kind of place where you stop in, and the servers know you by name,” Overman says. The family-owned Oak Ridge Bagels & Deli is popular for its northeastern-style sandwiches, while the Rio Grande Kitchen & Cantina serves fresh Mexican cuisine and specialty flavored margaritas. Poppy & Vine Boutique is one of several local shops selling home décor, clothing, accessories and other gifts. Locals can head to the nearby Food Lion for groceries and other necessities.
