Marlow is halfway between Oak Ridge and the Cumberland Mountains
Marlow is a rural community bordering the popular Knoxville suburb of Oak Ridge. Streets here are private, tucked among forests and in the shadow of mountains. “As you go north of Oak Ridge, you run into the Cumberland Mountains,” says Chevy Emert, a Realtor with United Real Estate Solutions who sells homes in the greater Knoxville area. “There’s a huge outdoor park for mountain biking and ATVs, so you’re going to see tons of trucks pulling side by sides.” In addition to outdoor attractions, Marlow residents are a few minutes away from shopping options in Oak Ridge and careers working in nuclear energy. “You’ve got a lot of engineer-minded folks who live in this area,” Emert says.

Rustic homes can come with several acres of land
Properties in Marlow sit back on personal driveways, with large backyards and mature trees. It’s common to see one story ranch-styles or raised ranches built from the mid-1900s through today. Since they are outside city limits, most homes have a private septic tank. Prices vary widely based on size, condition and acreage.
Many single-family and manufactured homes typically sell for around $200,000 to $400,000. Houses that range from $400,000 to $600,000 often have yards that span several acres. Properties between $600,000 and $2 million are less likely to hit the market and offer luxury lifestyles on up to 25 acres of land. Properties along the area's creeks may require additional flood insurance.

Some of Tennessee’s best mountain biking at Windrock
Ten miles away, Windrock Bike Park is a mountain biking destination owned by five-time downhill World Cup champion Aaron Gwin. The park is unique for staying open in all seasons and offers some of the most challenging trails in the state. “I had a client who moved to this area specifically so that their daughter, who was a big-time mountain biker, could practice at Windrock,” Emert says. “The park is supposedly really good.” Located in the Cumberland Mountain range, Windrock Mountain is also home to several campgrounds and a shooting range.
Other outdoor attractions in the area include family-run farms with petting zoos and organic plant sales. The North Ridge Trail runs for 8 miles just south of Marlow, and Oak Ridge is known for its well-maintained parks along Melton Lake.

The city of Oak Ridge has “all the essentials”
Five miles south, the heart of Oak Ridge is chock-full of shopping centers but lacks a walkable downtown. The community has a hospital, and grocery options include Kroger, Aldi and Walmart. According to Emert, all the essentials are nearby, including medical services, local restaurants and franchises. “You don’t have to leave the Oak Ridge area unless you want to," he says. The family-run Big Ed’s Pizza has been a favorite for New York-style pies for over 50 years, and Dean’s Restaurant & Bakery is known for its classic Southern food. The town also has its fair share of events, notably the Lavender Festival, which drew 24,000 people in 2024.
Marlow is less than 10 miles from Oliver Springs and Clinton. Both communities have grocery stores, and Clinton has a vintage downtown full of boutiques and restaurants.

Oak Ridge employers and commuting to Knoxville
Many residents in the area work in the city. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 National Security Complex are major nuclear energy and national security employers. Both facilities were instrumental in the creation of the first atomic bomb and are designated as Superfund sites for cleaning up possible nuclear contamination. Marlow is located on the opposite side of the city from these facilities, so the area is unaffected.
Residents who commute to Knoxville are looking at a 25-mile trip. The drive typically takes 40 minutes via back roads or connecting to Interstate 40. The regional McGhee Tyson Airport is just outside Knoxville, a 30-mile trip from Marlow.
