Neighborhood in Oakland, California
Alameda County 94621
It may no longer be home to the Golden State Warriors or the Oakland Raiders, but residents of the East Oakland's Coliseum neighborhood are still only a short walk from an Oakland A’s baseball game or concert at the city’s iconic arena and baseball stadium. The homes and apartments in this urban neighborhood are also near the Coliseum BART station, making for a convenient commute.
Laid out on a traditional, flat street grid, this residential area offers a mix of homes dating back to the early 20th century including many small bungalows and Craftsman homes. Here, you’ll see plenty of tiny, fenced-in yards, landscaped walkways leading up to front doors, cars parked in paved driveways and plenty of street parking. From some porches and decks, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the oak-dotted hills in the east. Many of these residences were built nearly a century ago but have been renovated with modern amenities like updated kitchens and bathrooms. The neighborhood is competitively priced for the Bay Area, with homes typically selling for between $400,000 and $600,000. There are also several newer apartment buildings in the area, including several refurbished public and affordable housing complexes.
You’ll have your pick of baseball games to attend at the nearby RingCentral Coliseum, where the Oakland Athletics, known as the Oakland A’s, play their home games. The team has won nine World Series Championships since it was founded in 1901. Residents can also easily catch a concert at the Oakland Arena, a 19,000-seat venue where major touring acts consistently perform. The arena holds the distinction of being the venue the Grateful Dead, a Bay Area jam band, played most often during their storied career. Plans are underway to revamp the neighborhood and the stadium grounds with a mix of new housing, retail and other amenities in the coming years, although it's been a slow-moving process.
If you’re seeking outdoor activities and relaxation, the Coliseum district offers several lovely parks that are walkable from many homes. Make sure you stop by the Carter-Gilmore Sports Complex, a community park named for the first African American ever elected to the Oakland City Council in 1950. With grassy fields, baseball diamonds and several playgrounds, it’s a great place to spend an afternoon with the kids. A few blocks away, you can stop by Coliseum Gardens, an easygoing community park with sport courts, picnic tables and play structures.
Students in the neighborhood attend Greenleaf Elementary School and Middle School and Castlemont High School. Greenleaf Elementary and Middle is modern, two-story schoolhouse tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood nearby. Retail and dining are sparse in the Coliseum district. You can stop by Dallaq Market for something quick, but for everything else you’ll need to hop in the car and drive. If you head down International Boulevard, you’ll find lots of corner markets and fast and casual dining. Head south to the neighboring city of San Leandro and you can swing by grocery stores like Safeway.
Coliseum is perfectly placed for commuters. The neighborhood is traversed by both a BART train and an Amtrak line, with stations that are within walking distance. Hop aboard, and you’re never far from major Bay Area employment centers, cultural attractions and entertainment destinations.
