Dimond District
Vibrant restaurants, shops and independent grocers
The Dimond District’s main commercial strip is on MacArthur Boulevard — a mini-mecca of lively restaurants, cafes, taquerias and independent grocers. Locals can walk to La Farine bakery for decadent French-style pastries, breads and cakes. Weekend brunch enthusiasts go to Grand Lake Kitchen, a popular Oakland eatery. There’s also Bombera, an upscale Mexican restaurant; it has some of the best tacos in the East Bay, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Residents have several nearby options for groceries: Farmer Joe’s is a long running family grocer that’s been in the neighborhood since 1994; Food Mill is a small natural grocer that’s been in the neighborhood for more than 80 years; and Safeway is a neighborhood mainstay with a pharmacy inside.Dimond Park paradise
For outdoor relaxation, Dimond Park offers a 94-acre community space with a swimming pool and a playground. It offers an access point for the Dimond Canyon Trail, a winding pathway that twists and turns through towering redwoods, tall oaks and blooming wildflowers in a lush, urban canyon. From there, the trail meanders north, providing a connection to nearby Joaquin Miller Park and Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, two popular hiking spots with deep stands of redwoods nestled in the hills. “In the Dimond, you have this experience of convenient city living but with parks and recreation close by. You get the best of both worlds,” says Realtor Maria Cavallo-Merrion of Vanguard Properties, a longtime East Bay resident who grew up in Oakland. “It’s really special to have something like Dimond Park in the middle of your neighborhood.”Dimond District Oktoberfest
Once a year, the neighborhood hosts a lively Oktoberfest celebration, a tradition dating back to the early 20th century when the Dimond was home to many German Americans. With more than 200 craft beers and food vendors, the festival is one of the Bay Area’s premier craft beer showcases.Renovated early 20th-century homes
With a wide range of California bungalows, Craftsman and Mission Revival style homes built in the 1920s and 30s that have been restored and renovated, the district offers a historic look with a splash of the modern. Flourishing gardens stretch from front patios to sidewalks, and tall palm and pine trees tower over narrow streets. The streets begin to slope upward in the east end of the neighborhood, curving along forested vistas with views of the cityscape unfurling below. Home prices in the area typically range from $800,000 to $1.5 million.Local schools close to home
Students in the neighborhood can attend Sequoia Elementary School, which earns a B rating from Niche, Sequoia Elementary, located within the neighborhood, is notable for its outdoor gardens. The school has continually expanded the amount of green space on its campus and now has more than five gardens and a creek restoration bed where students can learn about local plant life and ecosystems. Students then move on to C-rated Bret Harte Middle School and B-rated Skyline High School. A few blocks away, students browse the stacks at the Oakland Public Library Dimond Branch, a white and orange modernist-style building and one of the most popular libraries in the city.Getting around the East Bay and Beyond
