Vintage homes preserve Elmhurst Park's historical charms
Elmhurst Park sprang during East Oakland’s early-20th-century industrial heyday, when whole neighborhoods emerged to house the city’s growing pool of workers. Though Oakland’s once-vibrant manufacturing industry may not be what it was, these prewar residences still form the core of Elmhurst Park’s housing stock. Single-story homes built from the 1910s to 1960s vary in price from $320,000 to $750,000, with homes closer to International Boulevard costing more than those nearer the railroad. Homes built since the 2000s vary from $590,000 to $755,000. “The market is kind of the same across the city, as well as Elmhurst Park, and it is moving, but higher interest rates have slowed it down considerably,” Mejia says. Elm trees shade both residences and sidewalks. Most homes have compact front yards, and many driveways are gated to guard against motor vehicle theft, of which there is a risk double the national average, according to the CAP Index. Elmhurst Park as a whole scores a 6 on the index, two points higher than the national average. The community comes together at local parks
This neighborhood takes its name from the local park, which sits along 98th Avenue at Elmhurst Park’s southern edge. This green space is surrounded by elm trees and consists of an open yard, a playground and a baseball field. Just seven blocks north of the neighborhood, the Tassafaronga Recreation Center hosts events from baseball practices to cookouts and an “urban farm” gardening program.Diverse programs and celebrations at Castlemont High
Esperanza Elementary School receives a C rating from Niche, while Elmhurst United Middle School scores a C-minus. Castlemont High School, which receives a C rating, offers dual enrollment programs as well as specialized academies for health equity and sustainable urban design. This school also celebrates its diverse student body through events like Black History Month, Polynesian Day and a Latino Banquet. Each year the school's Pacific Bridge Club sends students throughout Asia to both learn about world cultures and encourage volunteerism.International Boulevard connects Elmhurst Park with downtown
International Boulevard leads to downtown Oakland 8 miles to the northwest. The 1T bus, which follows this same route, ferries passengers to the city center within a 50-minute journey. San Francisco is a 20-mile drive up Interstates 880 and 80. The nearest hospital is the San Leandro Hospital, 4 miles down San Leandro Boulevard, while the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport sits just over 2 miles down 98th Avenue.International groceries on International Boulevard
International Boulevard serves as one of Oakland's main retail corridors and forms Elmhurst Park’s eastern border.. Super Mercado Mi Tierra sells Mexican groceries, bakes bread and cakes at its bakery. It also serves up traditional pollo asado and other roasted meats from its grill. Lopez Deli & Bakery, also located along International Boulevard, offers warm meals from burritos and toasted tortas to breakfast croissants and coffee. Safeway is 2.5 miles down San Leandro Boulevard.
